I was told to expect a very commercial collection from one of Poland’s biggest fashion brands, information pills which opened with the Monnari face – a sexy older lady. ‘Ex model, advice TV presenter’ – myself and my neighbour correctly guessed as I marvelled at the polished front row opposite us.

Wrap overs, petal skirts, cable knits, lime, purple and a first showing for on trend emerald green. Dreadful jewellery. Grey, moire, lilac brocade, splashy flower prints and an unnecessary fur cape. Totally without focus and commercial as promised.

Dawid Tomaszewski is the prodigal son who got away… a Polish boy who studied internationally, sickness including at the London College of Fashion, order before settling in Berlin where he started his own name label in 2008 to much acclaim. For Friday’s finale he showed directly after The Golden Thread awards at Fashion Week Poland, and it was a salient reminder of what exactly is expected from world class fashion design.

Strobe lights and the soft patter of rainfall were overlaid by an increasingly frantic piano as models with neat up dos and side fringes swept onto the catwalk. This was a tightly edited collection that encompassed beautifully fitted dresses with well placed ruffles, high waisted pleated tweed skirts, huge cowl necked woven knits and crystal encrusted bodices. Of particular acclaim was a bodiced body topped with a shimmering gauze dress. Earthy woollens gave way to jade green silk and subtlety dip dyed floating gowns worthy of the red carpet. It was an incredibly attractive and polished collection that had more than a hint of classic British design. There was much here for Polish fashion designers to aspire to, although I am hoping the fur arms were not real.

The last of Saturday’s Off Out Of Schedule featured the work of Paulina Plizga from Silesia, viagra 100mg a graduate of the School of Fine Arts in Krakow.

Blue smoke, chiming bells and booming bass beats set the atmosphere, but for some inexplicable reason the designer had decided it would be a good idea to dress each model at the head of the catwalk – thereby demonstrating the versatility of her recycled zippered creations, and ensuring that the show took a tediously long time. A garment was carefully removed from one model’s legs and reconvened as a cape on another. Maybe it had seemed like a good and innovative idea in rehearsals but in reality there was barely any light in the smokey gloom and it was a struggle to see what was going on… which made it even more tedious. The looped soundtrack didn’t help matters either.

Despite this I really liked Paulina Plizga‘s collection, which made effective use of upcycled fabrics to create a patchwork collection with ethics at its heart. It was also a rare example of intelligent and interesting styling: models were accessorised with cobwebbed face masks and bin bags on their feet, tangled threads dangling in chaotic patterns. It had real potential to wow.

Ewa Kozieradzka put on a fun and very different catwalk show that featured bouncy girls in cheeky secretary glasses and flirty pony tails. As my neighbour said ‘there must be a lot of vodka backstage’ for they came racing out in sweet little swing dresses, what is ed blowing kisses to the audience, bopping, curtseying, swinging, twirling their full skirts and posing like crazy.

At the end two of the girls held hands as they skipped along together. If mustard and black are your thing then this would have tickled your fancy greatly – but I can’t help feeling that it would have been so much better in an extended colour range and in many different types of fabrics beyond basic woollen jersey.

Wiola Wo?czy?ska kicked off the Off Out of Schedule on Saturday morning with a collection that was a taste of things to come… overly long and massively in need of a serious edit. There was nice styling with side swept hair and calf length socks, more about but it went on… forever… and most of the looks were incredibly similar.

Then one model fell over due to ill-fitting shoes – which was again a precedent for other shows. But oh my was the setting amazing – all the Off Out Of Schedule shows took place in Bielnik and Elektrownia at Podsiad?o Ksiezy Mlyn – a ramshackle old textiles factory that is typical of the fantastic industrial architectural style of ?ód?. It really was a venue like no other I have seen. More photos of that to come…

Whilst I liked the draping, web subtle colouring and asymmetric shapes this show was overly commercial for an Off Schedule event and some of the fabrics appeared to be of poor quality – a big no no on the catwalk. It’s a shame because there really was the kernel of something special here, and if it was more finely refined I could see it appealing to more sophisticated fashion palettes in a jiffy. It’s perhaps no surprise to learn that Wiola Wo?czy?ska is a stylist as well as fashion designer, and has participated in a workshop with Central Saint Martins. She also won a heap of awards at last year’s Golden Thread.

This is just a small selection of the enormous collection. My advice to Wiola Wo?czy?ska? Edit edit edit… and have a bit more fun. Go on! It’s your chance to wow…

It’s a bad sign when the opening intro to a show is more exciting than the actual show. So it was with well known brand Hexeline, medicine which opened with Alpacas clambering all over each other to frantic drumbeats.

Quilting, shaggy coats, sheepskin, ruched puffas, all in muted tones with black. Then swing coats, 60s shift dresses, gold bangles, a net maxi skirt and were those real black fur stoles? So many different shapes, wobbling models and no coherent vision. Despite the Alpaca warfare edgy Hexeline are not. But hey, it was a commercial collection and they clearly sell well. Hopefully alpacas really do come in all colours of the rainbow… including black.

Joanna Klimas has had an interesting career to date: initially trained as a psychologist before turning to fashion a decade later. She was one of the first Polish designers to embrace a new minimalism in the 1990s, generic appearing in the first issue of Polish Elle. In 2001 she began to design costumes for the opera but returned to fashion design recently.

This collection was dominated by black and tasteful neutrals such as beige, cheap creamy yellow, order nude and camel. There was a lot of asymmetric shaping, floaty maxi dresses mixed with leather swing crop tops, overlong collars – all accessorised with boyish black oxfords and short socks. I wasn’t convinced by an unflattering sheer plastic skirt or a weird grey printed skin fabric and I was starting to recognise each model’s individual walk, which is never a good point in the proceedings. By the time the turquoise chiffon hit the catwalk I had also lost track of the number of floaty maxi dresses I had seen at Fashion Week Poland. Truth be told Joanna Klimas left me underwhelmed.

Today sees the launch of QueensOfVintage.com – brought to us by the people that run another favourite site of ours, greenmystyle.com, , queens of vintage is packed full of interesting features, such as ‘A history of style: the feather‘ and ‘Top 100 Queens‘, not a list of royalty or friends of Dorothy, it is in fact a lovely collation of people with lovely vintage style.

If it’s buying vintage you’re after, without having to hunt through rails and rails, pay a visit to somelikeitvintage.com, not only does it have a snazzy name but being a Canadian online store, it’s a great chance to get your hands on vintage from the other side of the Atlantic. For those whose vintage tastes are more extravagant, on Saturday, 31st January, you can indulge yourself at the buymywardrobe.com event, where ladies with expensive wardrobes, sort through the bits of designer couture they no longer wear and kindly bring it to the Adam St members club so us mere mortals can have a chance to own some genuine designer pieces at only a fraction of the designer price. Amazing!

However, if you love vintage but are not fussed by labels, then this is the event for you. This Thursday, 29th January, in the Stepney Green warehouse store, The East End Thrift Store is holding one of their legendary parties! Here at Amelia’s we’ve been several times and always picked up superb bargains and quirky pieces, while quaffing the free wine. Yes that’s right, free wine and a warehouse of vintage clothes! Heaven!
