Amelia’s Magazine | Pam Hogg: London Fashion Week A/W 2014 Catwalk Review

I thoroughly enjoyed the Pam Hogg S/S 2014 catwalk show last September, bathed as it was in a joyous theatrical atmosphere. So I was a little surprised to find that this season the Pam Hogg A/W 2014 show felt like a deflated repetition of last year, with a couple of the outfits seemingly almost identical to those shown for S/S 2014. However, it all made much more sense when, afterwards, I found out more about how and why this collection was created. In fact, Pam Hogg had opted not to show this season, but had a change of heart after a last minute personal request from Amnesty International to give a nod to Russian punk band Pussy Riot during London Fashion Week, especially as the event coincided with the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Therefore, there were only three weeks to put the collection together.

The show was titled COURAGE and opened with models carrying boards emblazoned with the statements “This is a dedication to Pussy Riot” and “This collection is not for sale“. The first section of the collection featured the distinctive coloured balaclavas which have become a widely-recognised symbol of the Pussy Riot girls, and was a straight dedication to the group. Pam Hogg sent ethereal bridal looks accessorised with ornate gold headpieces down the catwalk on a mixture of male, female and transexual models, perhaps in an effort to highlight the issues around gay marriage, especially in Russia. According to her, gold represents the church and white represents peace and love for everyone. The intense colours that were patchworked into her trademark catsuits were her tribute to the gay community and the richness that it has given culture.

Since I was unable to attend many of my favourite designer’s shows this season, and indeed had no help in covering the shows (apart from this post, written by the fabulous Maria Papadimitriou) I thought it would be a nice idea to do an open callout for illustrators to depict their favourite outfit from any of the London Fashion Week shows. Here are the results, in no particular order: I am sure you will agree that they are fabulous. Long live fashion illustration!

Serbian fashion designer George Styler was a major crowd pleaser at Ones to Watch, showcasing a collection dominated by his heavily embellished knitwear. Think spiky shouldered jackets, rainbow sequinned leggings, thickly embroidered knitwear, pompoms, gold coins and ruffles aplenty. Models wore their hair in complex braids, sometimes topped with folk style crowns. There were a few menswear outfits thrown in for good measure, and perhaps with commercialisation in mind George had boldly applied his name to branded leggings which were sent down the catwalk accompanied by a matching holdall. In a rather delightful touch all front row guests received a mirrored heart magnet; an old fashioned East European traditional gift for Valentine’s Day. This was not a collection for the minimalists.

The show notes reveal that this collection, titled Network, was influenced by a double meaning of the concept, both the idea of interweaving between cultures in our globalised world, and also the lack of real contact in a society reliant on the virtual web. I’m not sure I would have grasped the second aspect of this idea, but overall lthe collection reminded me of a look that was briefly popular in the late 80s and early 90s thanks to the likes of MC Kinky. You remember Everything Starts With An ‘E’? Of course you do…. or maybe I’m just showing my age.

Amelia’s Magazine | Bora Aksu: London Fashion Week S/S 2015 Catwalk Review

Bora Aksu by Jenny Zych
Bora Aksu S/S 2015 by Jenny Zych.

The marvellous Bora Aksu took an early slot on Friday morning to present a collection inspired by Queen Victoria’s paper doll of the celebrated romantic ballerina Marie Taglioni. The show opened with a group of girls dressed in trademark layerings of crisp snowy white and peachy beige. They wore coral lips and nails, huge diamante earrings and long hair tied sharply to one side. Black socklets under sandals and darkened lenses on glasses (a new collaboration with eyewear designer Tom Davies) ensured this romantic collection had a thoroughly modern appeal.

The girls progressed down the catwalk in combinations of cut out embroidery and delicate crochet panels, worn beneath lashings of lacey silk and ruffled organza. On trend mid length dirndl skirts and cropped jackets were given the Bora Aksu spin with the gradual introduction of palest blue grey, petrol blue and slashes of deep indigo. Details such as thick white seams, bibbing and traditional woven fabric gave a crisp edge to the garments. As a recent convert to the charms of crochet I particularly admired the hooped crochet cape worn over a sleek pencil dress.

The show finished with a series of layered dresses featuring sophisticated black organza and a bewitching lilac crochet dress topped off with a sweeping swathe of purple tulle. This was, as ever, a magical collection, full of delicious detailing on beautifully wearable items.
