And so, viagra the 2011 graduates shows begin. My first invite was to the Havering College graduate fashion show just down the road at the Brick House in the Truman Brewery, for sale but I missed the entirety of it due to misinformation on arrival.

This was all I saw of the fashion show… the final parade.

Instead I discovered the wonders of the 3D Design department, side effects showing in the space around the corner next to The Big Chill Bar as part of this years Free Range Art and Design Show which has just kicked off with a two month round of graduate showcase exhibitions.

Sarah-Jane Warner is ‘challenging human interaction with physical objects through sight and touch’ with lovely ceramics in slightly varied curvaceous floramantic patterns with coloured interiors. She has also encased a table and the surrounding floor in a woven knit that questions the nature of a our surroundings.

Laura Mardell has made small bottles of bloody teeth which question ‘the coexistence of dreams and reality in products’. I have no idea what is meant by these strange phials but they are certainly intriguing. Her website says “Laura has even managed to modify sarcasm into design, which can be described as eclectic.” Definitely zany.

Tessa Doughty was perhaps the most prolific and inspired of the three that I discovered, aiming to work with ‘the perception and transformation of objects through patterns’ she’d created an ingenious glass coffee table with a sliding top section, some wonderful ceramic and glass egg shaped nesting bowls and a plethora of stackable perspex rings in bright colours.

Now Tessa and her classmates just need to work on their google ranking and get proper websites that make the most of their talent. All three girls have used wix to create very basic sites: am I the only person who really really dislikes wix as a free website platform? It’s clunky and flash driven which means that wix websites are hard to use and hard to find online – both of which are a massive no no for showing professional work.

Instead I recommend looking at any other number of website platforms that are free or low cost and easy to set up – try indexhibit for a very basic and clean looking website that actually works in search engines, Virb for a cheap but easy to build website that looks great or Cargo for a web hosting platform that also offers a large and vibrant online community.

The exhibition finishes tomorrow, Monday 6th June. What a find!

It amazes me that I’ve never been to the Art Car Boot Fair before… but there you have it, buy this year was my very first time, despite it’s proximity to my home. I think I may have been inadvertently put off by the hype surrounding limited editions by very famous artists, sold out of the boots of (sponsored) cars to the desperate queueing hoardes.

But if you could put aside the hoopla there was a lot of very interesting stuff to see and buy, especially by lesser known up and coming artists and collectives… here’s some of my favourite discoveries.

Renegade ceramicist Carrie Reichardt was there, selling amusing tiles and bastardised royal plates. Love her stuff – she’s invited me over to her studio in West London, so hopefully I will find the time to visit soon.

On stage Hot Breath karaoke entertained as Tranny Tarot predicted the future.

Over the way there was face painting for trendy art kiddies, and adults. With some impressive and unusual results.

Holly Freeman was selling a Pint of Art for just a fiver. Pints of liquid in various guises, sold as art, was a fashionable theme.

I particularly liked the recycled wall plaques of self taught artist Cliff Pearcey – tribal wooden faces created from found objects: old chopping boards, keys and hinges given a new lease of life.

Busty Babes on Bank Letters was a real winner – how to turn debts into cash. Kelly-Anne Davitt persuaded at least one of my party to help her out with that mission. Here she is seen celebrating a sale to Gavin Turk.

I finally had the chance to meet The Girls, who were posing for pictures beside the boot of their car which featured a carefully curated exhibition of postal memorabilia. POSTED celebrates the dying art of letter writing.

There was hula hooping, public spanking and bubble blowing. And if you think this all looks like rather good fun but missed the Art Car Boot Fair this year, then there is still a chance to catch a bit of the magic at the pop up Art Car Boutique in a few weeks time at the new Apple Cart Festival in Victoria Park on 7th August. Lovely.

Now for the best of the rest that I saw on a quick whip around the Cambewell College of Arts MA shows: The MA Designer Maker Visual Arts displayed some wonderful works in a room titled Making_Makes_Me_Me, thumb an apt title given the theme of the new V&A Power of Making exhibition.

I was immediately drawn to the work of Chieh Ting Huang, buy more about who had grouped together The P Objects in semi darkness. His lighting was inspired by the lantern designs of both east and west, and the taming of fire as the cornerstone of humanity. Capturing the fragility of paper shades within elaborate wood cages, his lovely lights took on the appearance of glowing crystals.

I liked the playful slip designs of ceramicist Yaqi Zhao, splashed across wide shallow bowls.

Upstairs the MA in Fine Art was experiencing a takeover from Rachael House‘s Feminist Disco, dedicated to, erm, feminism – with particular reference to musical feminist icons such as the late lamented Poly Styrene.

Rachael House was busy playing classic tunes on her miniature decks, whilst visitors were invited to create their own feminist icon on a paper plate. ‘I didn’t want it to be all about me,’ she said. ‘What does a feminist look like?‘ enquired a square plate, and it seemed plenty of people, young and old, male and female, were willing to respond to her engaging interactive artwork.

To top it all off the Hackney Secular Singers (a punk choir that I used to be part of) gave a rousing half hour acapella set of favourites, including Poly’s great song Germ Free Adolescents.

Now, dosage finally, it’s time for my second round of blog posts featuring the best of Ovo Show from Camberwell College of Arts illustration graduates (read the first review of Ovo Show here). This time let’s head downstairs at the Red Gallery. I’m going to have to split this into two because it’s such a beast…

Turning into the cavernous downstairs space it was the work of Sam Taylor that grabbed my attention – nutty vignettes of a splodgyily painted bird on a skateboard, floating boobs (not sure what that means!) and portraits of gnarled and wrinkled characters against primary coloured backgrounds. His is a land where beards hold the same intellect as brains.

Across the way Tom Dorkin had created some beautiful fine line drawings of some equally idiosynrcratic characters: a sailor checked his binoculars as his woollen jumper unraveled. He had also dissected a plane and a ship in fine detail. Follow Tom Dorkin on Twitter.

Iriini Kalliomaki specialised in oddball characters, created in tiny perfection from what looked like paper mache – twins, a big haired granny, pouchy cheeked man with an apron – all placed in photographic situations for her book The Racing Granny. Also on display was the flying car in which Granny races.

Gemma Whittaker produced some pretty ceramic bowls featuring daubed drawings of cats and elephants.

Megan Sinclair Georgy Porgy rats

Megan Sinclair‘s 3D paper cutouts featured rat racing, a card game and a boy in a garage being yelled at by his mum. The vignettes were taken from Roald Dahl‘s Georgy Porgy, a short story for adults. Follow Megan Sinclair on Twitter.

Bea Wilson had produced an enigmatic fill, Arkham, which was inspired by fictional landscapes.

Hollie Limer also played with paper cutouts, which she had placed inside a darkened room to create an eery monotone landscape… I think they were supposed to be seen by moody candlelight but the set was pitch black when I visited.

Also on the paper front Karin Söderquist showed a large pipe smoking man and a traditional Scandinavian scene. Very clean and cool.

Alice Stanley‘s narrative pencil drawings were very different from her wonderful knitted animals, much more moody and evocative than a cute little mouse, but then I imagine that knitting was a bit of a relaxing respite from school work.

Rosie Eveleigh did some awesome abstract work on paper, ceramics and on mini hanging woven carpets. I think the textile design seen in the last photo is also hers. Someone tell me if it isn’t!

Crossing rock formations with intimate slicings of anatomy, mind Jennifer Crouch splashed semi abstract drawings across ceramics and fabric chair coverings. Very appealing, but in a slightly strange way.

Alice Devine was on the stall downstairs when I bought my Alice Stanley knitted bear so we had a bit of a chat, during which I was most distressed to learn that this is the last year that the Camberwell Ceramics degree course will run… for it is closing down and illustration students will no longer be able to experiment with intriguing ceramic applications for their drawings. Sad days indeed.

Anna Suwalowska‘s work quite simply took my breath away. Her surreal vision of hell was full of interesting oddball detail.

Jim Bob Art is still hard at work creating his amazing animal plates, but he is also now hand painting these brilliant sets of coffee cups: which work to perfection when stacked. He is currently holding court in his own shop on Columbia Road, so why not visit in the run up to Christmas?

I’ve already mentioned Lush Designs once but I’m going to mention them again because their quirky print designs are right up my street. I love these vegetable oven gloves – sprouts, carrots and beetroot make such a great seasonal colour combo.

Also in stock at Haus London are these beautiful wooden chopping boards created in a Hackney workshop by Hampson Woods from fallen London Plane trees. Gloriously smooth and sexy to the touch (I’m not making it up, I’ve touched one). Each board comes with a tag explaining the provenance of the tree it came from.

Rob Ryan of course deserves a mention, now that he designs such a wide range of ceramic wares. I particularly like this set of four plates titled ‘This Was Our Place‘, available at Soma Gallery.

And to round off my tips for fabulous kitchenware purchases: three beautiful laminated wooden trays, all made from sustainably sourced Scandinavian birch wood. The biggest tray is a retro design by Marcus Walters for Howkapow.

I am a massive fan of Lush Designs – two designers who work together to create totally inimitable artwork – think wild boars, swinging monkeys, strutting cats, all with gold detailing. We have their fine bone china mugs at home and I LOVE THEM. They were meant as gifts but they never left the house…

I love 1973, and not just because this husband and wife team were born in 1973 (and so was I) – their shapely new Grafika mugs bear bold optical designs.

Donna Wilson turns her hand to ceramics with this lovely bone china mug featuring a mid-century-inspired Acorn design, available from Soma Gallery.

Swedish designer Ingela P Arrhenius is a renowned illustrator whose retro influenced designs appear in books, on clothes and across fabrics and stationary. I love this bird mug! Available on Hus and Hem, a website that features loads of great Scandinavian design.
