According to trends analysts designer sunglasses are getting smaller and rounder: with edgier designers such as Ashish showing the kind of sunnies that I sported in the early 90s, along with baggy rave clothing, hippy dresses and grunge gear.

There are also a plethora of Ray Ban Aviator type shapes such as those at Felder Felder which are coloured in a nod to the ever popular heavily shaded retro look which is still popular, as seen in Gucci glasses for S/S 2013.

My favourite high end designer look of the season has to be these amazing Coco Chanel sunglasses featuring a sculptural cutout of the visionary lady herself. But if the styling at some shows is anything to go by then the hottest sunglasses trend for S/S 2013 is still bigger, brighter and lairier. And not always entirely fit for purpose.

Tatty Devine‘s scribble sunglasses for the new Louise Gray collectionNow What‘ echo the oversized rings and dramatic eyebrows created for the show. You’d struggle to see out of them but they made a big impact when worn with huge pearlised mirror effect dangly earrings.

Over at Leutton Postle the daring design duo had raided their craft box to embellish bold sunglasses with brightly coloured beads, leaving only a small gap through which to view the world. It will be intriguing to see how such unconventional looks filter through to mainstream sunglasses trends over the next few seasons.

Amelia’s Magazine | London Fashion Week S/S 2011 Catwalk Review: Leutton Postle

Upon checking some of Leutton Postle’s previous work I became really excited about the prospect of going to see their first London Fashion Week show and collection: I could see it featured turf-like groups of cable ties sprouting out of hooded garments in various places and I have always used them a lot in my work. A few months ago I spotted a glorious neckpiece made out of cable ties in a high street store window display, information pills so seeing them in Leutton Postle‘s work further confirmed my suspicion that cable ties might just be having a fashion moment.

Being a newbie to London Fashion Week I could have waited happily for hours in the queue but actually the show was delayed only by half an hour or so, which is pretty good I hear. I followed the crowd into Freemasons’ Hall (Vauxhall Fashion Scout’s venue) and picked up a spot next to the pro photographers at the end of the runway, a decision which made my experience much more intense. As soon as the models came out it was not the soundtrack to the show that I heard but the constant clicking from such a large number of cameras gathered near me; and to me that was just as thrilling.

Behind the luxury knitwear label Leutton Postle are designers Sam Leutton and Jenny Postle, both Central Saint Martins graduates – upon graduating Jenny had her MA AW11 collection snapped up by London’s Browns Focus and Sam went to China to work with knitwear innovators Stoll. Their pieces are truly original with a couture quality and they suggest time-consuming experimentation with knitwear design. I felt that in the colourful, intricate and eccentric designs of their collaborative label there was a real enjoyment of craft and play.

Apart from the fact that the collection was very colourful, which has a natural appeal to me personally, the patchwork element was another thing I really enjoyed and it made me think that perhaps in the future, when all designers might have to use mainly scraps and leftovers or recycle fabrics for their designs, it would not be that bad at all if you had Leutton Postle’s talent and imagination! In a way parts of the clothes did seem like they had been constructed from random bits and pieces, put together really cleverly.

Extra elements of colourful playfulness were added to the show by the models’ make up which looked like they had just eaten from a bowl of multicoloured paint soup and then not wiped themselves properly, but it was a shame that some of the models’ faces did not match all that wonderful colour happiness, maybe the soup was not that good…

The designers themselves, however, looked very cheery and beautiful when they came out at the end to wave at an audience that was clapping in a very colourful way indeed!

Leutton Postle were one of the most exciting new designers that I encountered last season and so it was with anticipation that I attended their latest showing, soundtracked by the perfect mash up of squally post 80s beats.

Models with coloured brows or mesh facemasks wore a plethora of long knitted garments in a more sombre colour palette than was used for S/S 2012. Burnt oranges, copper, royal blue, mint green, yellow, burgundy – these were colours that on paper shouldn’t go together but worked brilliantly in this zany collection. Viewing these garments up close is always a treat as there is so much detail going on – geometric shapes in bobble knits were worn with tribal face patterned pencil skirt and jacket combos, created through a combination of jacquard knit and metallic applique. I can only begin to imagine the huge amount of work that must go into creating such a collection.

Matching metallic applique belt bags cinched the waists of baggy knee length tops, oversized eyeballs or giant doll-like faces with great sprouting masses of woolly hair emblazened across the whole front or back. Drawstring clutch bags hinted at a possible move in the direction of accessories, which I am sure would be much appreciated by fans. Nothing was left unembellished in this collection – from leggings to tasselled shoes, all felt the Leutton Postle effect. I love that knitwear is experiencing such a whole hearted renaissance… long may it last.

On the last day of London Fashion Week I just managed to catch the Leutton Postle presentation at Fashion Scout. Well, I say I, I had Snarfle attached to my front in a wrap like a carbuncular baby growth: most fun when trying to elbow my way into what passed for the photographer’s pit, for this season Leutton Postle eschewed the catwalk in favour of a presentation in the upper rooms. They had also decided to forgo their usual chunky knits, and instead focus on lightweight knitwear suitable for summer and presumably much easier to commercially produce. Still present and correct were the fabulous colour combinations that this brand has become known for – cobalt blue, mustard and dusky fleshy peach tones teamed with eye popping turquoise, red and orange trims.

Tassels reigned supreme – both chunky knots and delicate strands – fringing waist lines, slices of hem and cropped jackets. Zig zag triangles called to mind traditional ikat designs, re-imagined for a digitalised modern world. What looked like a light cable knit was used horizontally and vertically to create a bold pattern reminiscent of wire fencing. Knit was worn with loose shirts sporting appliqué details and high feature collars in contrasting materials, or teamed with floating wide legged chiffon trousers. This was all accessorised with bright red lips, slicked back mini quiffs… and some fascinating sunglasses and heels, heavily decorated with brightly coloured beads like those that can be glued into pictures for children’s artwork.

S/S 2013 showcased an interesting move forward for Leutton Postle – with a range of garments that managed to retaining all the fun elements and intriguing layered textures of their previous collections, whilst also showing how their unique aesthetic might work on the shop shelf.

Amelia’s Magazine | Leutton Postle: London Fashion Week S/S 2014 Digital Presentation Review

Leutton Postle S/S 2014 by Lynne Datson

On Saturday afternoon I popped into Canon‘s digital space at Somerset House with fifteen minutes to spare to see fashion’s hottest duo – Leutton Postle. Whilst Amy Gwatkin‘s S/S 2014 film was projected onto the wall, the luxury knitwear label’s model India sat elegantly in a corner fingering Mills & Boon novels.

All photography by Matt Bramford

Large scale, freehand illustrations come to life for S/S 2014. The crudeness of doodling and the simplicity of bold, vibrant shapes are transformed through Jacquard knits and raised embroidery. On white garments, starting as blank canvases, layers of neons are manipulated to create striking, unique pieces that you won’t find anywhere else on the London Fashion Week schedule. This season, plastics carrying the rich designs were juxtaposed with the softness of cottons, on wrap-around skirts, dresses and trousers.

Leutton Postle S/S 2014 by Lynne Datson

Amy Gwatkin‘s hypnotising film, shot in a quaint, typically English home, marries Martin Parr‘s cynical view of Middle England with the comedic vox pops of British favourites like Creature Comforts. India, the model, moves between rooms adorned with lowbrow decorations and soft-furnishings popular with old ladies (the film was set in one of the twosome’s neighbour’s homes) while musing on eccentricities of everyday life. The dulcet tones of the voiceover are in stark contrast to the surroundings in which they are delivered. Fashion films are brilliant, I thought, as I made my way through cocktail number three.
