I have been collecting fabulous lamps since I first started to scavenge second hand stores as a teenager. Here’s what caught my eye at Tent London this year.

Tent London 2012 review -Curiousa & Curiousa

I adored these jewel-like blown glass lamps by Curiousa & Curiousa from the Derbyshire town of Wirksworth. Each lampshade is traditionally blown without moulds so that any shape, check size or colour can be achieved according to a client’s wishes.

Tent London 2012 review -Kaspa REthinkthings
I was immediately attracted to the Kaspa glow-in-the-dark lamp by REthinkthings on the 5ml stand. What fun, viagra and a great xmas present for kids, both small and slightly larger… The 5ml Design Collective is a partnership between Ilsa Parry, Michael Cloke and Tom Sutton that aims so support and nurture up and coming design.

Tent London 2012 review -Rachel Powell
I first spotted Rachel Powell‘s clever wood veneer lampshades at the New Designers graduate showcase this summer. Since then her business has been growing at such a rate that she was able to take part in this much more professional industry showcase.

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -Melanie Roseveare - aka Melody Rose
Melanie Roseveare – aka Melody Rose – prints new designs onto upcycled bone china crockery. Her work reminds me of plates reconstructed by Carrie Reichardt as art pieces, ed but has a slightly more commercial edge. Her range comes in three collections: Urban Nature, cost Modern Surrealism and Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Zosienka & Rosie had produced some beautiful ceramic heart necklaces.

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -JimBobArt
It was nice to see that since the Bust Craftacular last Christmas the range of plates by James Ward (working under the name by JimBobArt) has expanded to include lots of new designs and other ceramic goods.

The Renegade Craft Fair obviously has some clout back in its home country of America, health since quite a few of the stallholders had flown over just to participate in the inaugural British event last weekend. This meant there was a welcome chance to discover some new crafting gems from across the pond, and marvel up close at the slightly different aesthetics of American design when compared to the UK’s own crafting scene. I’ve split my write ups into loosely grouped themes – first up some of the best artist and illustrators that I found.

John Vogl of The Bungaloo is obviously on to a winner: most of his display posters had been taken off the walls by the time I returned later on Sunday. I particularly liked the tour poster he had done for Explosions in the Sky.

The Being Natalie stall was crowded with bright little paintings by Natalie Turturro.

Ace illustrator Julia Pott was selling lots of goodies including these temporary tattoos.

Deborah Grace is one half of The Bulb and The Bee with her sister. She displayed some lovely collaged one off artworks and paintings.

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -Magic Industrie

Ryan Hansen of Magic Industrie, Los Angeles, creates handmade bookmarks and magic wallets from upcycled illustrations that he finds in salvaged books. One of these would make a beautiful alternative to the usual Oyster card holder.

Making stuff for oneself is the bedrock of the crafting scene so of course there were quite a few workshops ongoing when I visited the Renegade Craft Fair. The Stitch and Make studio were on hand to offer advice and The Make Lounge were teaching people to make miniature wool foxes.

Kim Smith runs Art Equals Happy, decease which was a beautifully laid out stall of woollen goodies, at the front of which she sat spinning on a big old fashioned wheel. Her blog makes for extremely interesting reading. On it I discovered that she’s big on sustainability, recycling card and paper to create her envelopes. I was even more intrigued to discover that Kim is currently on the BA in illustration at Camberwell – what an inspiring lady.

I loved the flock of sheep designs by Kingston University graduate Mary Kilvert, especially on cushions.

Perfect for kids, Diane Koss had a stall groaning under the weight of her colourful plush toys: think furry one eyed monsters with huge horns.

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -Gluckskafer
There were some cute felted animals for sale by Gluckskafer on the Selvedge magazine stall – though I can’t seem to locate them online anywhere. Sorry!

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -Robin & Mould

I was most impressed with the bold screenprinted designs of Robin & Mould who are based in rural Wiltshire. Their tea cosies, tea towels and cushions were emblazoned with gorgeous animal inspired graphics.

I loved the clear booklet Old Material* New Work** provided by the Royal College of Art Department of Ceramics and Glass. It really does make life so much easier when all the information is in one place, clinic smartly presented…

Beautiful bone china plates from Katy Jennings, erectile and ‘knitted’ birds.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Makiko Nakamura's Baronage Declasse
Loved Makiko Nakamura‘s Baronage Declasse (100 Years After the Party) – baroque styling meets the more surreal elements of pop art in these fun porcelain and lustre decorative objects, where rabbit faces pop out of dripping golden polka dot clocks.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Sarah Wiberley's Cameo Series
Sarah Wiberley‘s Cameo Series of hand blown glass were just beautiful, in tall vases and squat shapes. She used the traditional motif of a bird flying away.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Louis Thompson
Louis Thompson also showed colourful blown glass back lit against the wall. He is fascinated by repetition, sequencing, collections and medical apparatus. Objects thus become as important in a collective as they do alone.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Sadhbh Isabelle McCormack
Sadhbh Isabelle McCormack created bold statement jewellery from a mix of metals and perplex. Her totemic pieces were designed to combine the skills of craft with computer aided design in a balanced way.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Malene Hartmann Rasmussen
Malene Hartmann Rasmussen‘s surreal ceramic tableaux made me gasp in wonderment – her intention is to impose personal emotions and narratives onto container objects that traditionally have no feelings. She wants her work to seem skilled, elaborate and clumsy all at the same time and I’d say that this was achieved admirably. Beautiful and unique.

Chrystalla Achilleos‘ had created a wall installation called Strata: flowing glass forms made the most of the glass blowing process.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Silvia Weidenbach
Silvia Weidenbach created bundles of ceramic jewellery in Made to Treasure and Pleasure.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Helen Moore
Helen Moore ceramics were presented in beautiful graded wall installations. Here hopes to connect ‘the seemingly disparate facets of my own consciousness’… to create an ‘expanded understanding of the emotional and metaphorical capacity of colour within an analytical framework.’

Paul Stopler was standing next to his installation, and he offered me the aforementioned booklet as I admired his enormous cast glass vases up close. Thanking you kindly Paul, your work is stunning. The heavy glass changes subtly according to the light source.

I will confess that I found the new location for Communication Art & Design at the Royal College of Art show somewhat difficult to navigate – all those nooks and crannies had me convinced that I must have missed something.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Tom Senior
Tom Senior‘s animation looked at the consequences of being greedy ‘Four travellers come to rest in a bountiful land where luscious red strawberries grow on trees and meat and fish are plentiful.’ I guess it’s a metaphor for inherent human greed. It was fun, I’m sorry I can’t show it to you here.

Peter J. Laugesen produced an observational portrait of human alterations within nature that included a singing gnome. This was ‘wild life under control and the domesticated running wild.’

Jo Blaker in Communication Art & Design tackled illustrative ceramics as 3D Drawings, inspired by 17th century slipware. Symbols came from contemporary consumer culture.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Marine Duroselle
Marine Duroselle made a simple and beautiful card set alphabet using a risograph and letterpress.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Mike Redmond

Mike Redmond, who won the V&A student award, was hanging about near his Moving Towards Going Away Blueshift – Redshift. With titles such as 2. Hiding things we like and showing things we don’t. and 7. Angry country part 2 the museum is flooded and the bubble man is defeated, the escape plan is at hand it’s fair to say this was a fairly surreal final piece.

Textiles were displayed amongst product design at the Royal College of Art 2011 degree show – fitting, health as many textile designers showed practical applications for their textiles on cushions, trunks, tables and more.

I liked the striking surface patterns of Yunshin Cho‘s print, based on the skeleton of a ship. It reminds me of wood laminate and 50s design classics. But her website on her business card doesn’t work… hopefully soon?

Rachel Philpott chose a more avante garde approach: cotton covered with glitter and folded into intricate origami shapes. I don’t know how she did it but it was pretty amazing.

Dresses printed by Lauren Barfoot hung wafting in the light breeze near the window – dominated by orange and purple shades these designs were inspired by Matisse and Fauvism. She’s well up on Twitter. Go follow her.

An exploration between the natural and manmade was also the basis for Hannah Sabapathy‘s collection – seen here on an architectural side table.

Jonna Saarinen of Finland brought a Scandinvian sensibility to her Hundreds and Thousands print collection that was display to great affect on picnic ware and table cloths. Follow Jonna Saarinen on Twitter.

David Bradley explored printing and pleats in some extraordinary dresses. Best appreciated for their technical expertise close up.

Kitty Joseph created saturated colour prints in Colour Immersion.

RCA MA degree show 2011-Marie Parsons
Lastly, Marie Parsons used traditional stitched quilting as the basis for her final piece – a brightly coloured trunk that juxtaposed digital embroidery and laser cutting of latex on hard and soft surfaces. Her collection was influenced by East End building sites, Mykonos Town and Paris flea market finds.

The RCA Graduate Show continues until 3rd July so I highly recommend that you check it out soon, and get on board with my other write ups.

New Designers show review 2011-Thread&Berry Martin Stephenson
There were loads of other goodies to discover at New Designers part two. Here’s what stood out from the furniture, visit web designer maker, pill product design section: From Northumbria University I loved Thread&Berry soft toys by Martin Stephenson (always sucker for a nice soft toy).

There was an outstanding selection of wood based furniture design from the Building Crafts College. Makes me want to study how to make useful things with my hands again. Toby Whitworth created a beautiful curved laminated coffee table in zebrino and oak.

Raymond Coe‘s bold laminated coffee table came in ash.

New Designers show review 2011-Sofia Linden
And a more linear coffee table was designed by Sofia Linden. Wish I had money to fill my house with this kind of bespoke design.

At London Met a tilting double sided park bench took the name To-Gather, try by Minsung Lee.h.

The Really Tallboy by Paul Butcher was very eye catching, inlaid with a design that looked to be inspired by animal markings or paw prints.

From York St John University came Jigamals, made from plywood, leather, felt and cotton by Abby Collier and Ellie Hindby-Smith.

Hannastina Crick is a designer and maker who has just graduated from the University of Brighton. I loved her donut shaped straw bench.

Miranda Holms displayed an array of faceted pastel ceramic tulip vases and fab brightly coloured wall panels.

Samuel Sheard, an MA graduate of Central Saint Martins, makes magnificent spikey patterned furniture.
