The Renegade Craft Fair obviously has some clout back in its home country of America, health since quite a few of the stallholders had flown over just to participate in the inaugural British event last weekend. This meant there was a welcome chance to discover some new crafting gems from across the pond, and marvel up close at the slightly different aesthetics of American design when compared to the UK’s own crafting scene. I’ve split my write ups into loosely grouped themes – first up some of the best artist and illustrators that I found.

John Vogl of The Bungaloo is obviously on to a winner: most of his display posters had been taken off the walls by the time I returned later on Sunday. I particularly liked the tour poster he had done for Explosions in the Sky.

Deborah Grace is one half of The Bulb and The Bee with her sister. She displayed some lovely collaged one off artworks and paintings.

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -Magic Industrie

Ryan Hansen of Magic Industrie, Los Angeles, creates handmade bookmarks and magic wallets from upcycled illustrations that he finds in salvaged books. One of these would make a beautiful alternative to the usual Oyster card holder.

Making stuff for oneself is the bedrock of the crafting scene so of course there were quite a few workshops ongoing when I visited the Renegade Craft Fair. The Stitch and Make studio were on hand to offer advice and The Make Lounge were teaching people to make miniature wool foxes.

Kim Smith runs Art Equals Happy, decease which was a beautifully laid out stall of woollen goodies, at the front of which she sat spinning on a big old fashioned wheel. Her blog makes for extremely interesting reading. On it I discovered that she’s big on sustainability, recycling card and paper to create her envelopes. I was even more intrigued to discover that Kim is currently on the BA in illustration at Camberwell – what an inspiring lady.

I loved the flock of sheep designs by Kingston University graduate Mary Kilvert, especially on cushions.

Perfect for kids, Diane Koss had a stall groaning under the weight of her colourful plush toys: think furry one eyed monsters with huge horns.

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -Gluckskafer
There were some cute felted animals for sale by Gluckskafer on the Selvedge magazine stall – though I can’t seem to locate them online anywhere. Sorry!

Renegade Craft Fair London oct 2011 -Robin & Mould

I was most impressed with the bold screenprinted designs of Robin & Mould who are based in rural Wiltshire. Their tea cosies, tea towels and cushions were emblazoned with gorgeous animal inspired graphics.

Amelia’s Magazine | East London Design Show: Christmas Gift Ideas 2013

Hokolo London

I’ve shared my favourite finds from the 2013 Bust Craftacular, now here’s what I loved at the East London Design Show, held for the first time in the Truman Brewery. The Hokolo London stand, above, looked absolutely marvellous. Designer Jen has a great eye for striking colour combinations which she utilises in great graphic style to decorate homeware and accessories.

De Casa squid print

This squid is by DeCasa, which specialises in bold unusual print designs. Also check out their eye-catching caterpillar pattern.

Rosie Sanders baroque necklace

This super cool golden baroque necklace is by Rosie Sanders, whose work I have been admiring for some time on instagram. She had put together a beautiful festive display with a bunch of other jewellers.

Phoebe Jewellery moonstone moon pendant

I didn’t manage to look at all the other jewellery designers closely, but I absolutely adored this moonstone moon pendant by Phoebe Jewellery. She also does the cutest acorn pendants.

Quirky Curios glass lollipops

These are really fun; glass lollipops from an unidentified second year student at Havering College, part of the Quirky Curios collective. The Havering College 3D design course always churns out incredible talent – read one of my end of year reviews here to see more.

Really Mad Scientist- saucy Christmas games with fantastic illustrations by DJ Wheelie Bag

He’s a Really Mad Scientist: saucy Christmas games featuring fantastic illustrations had been put together by DJ Wheelie Bag, who drew me right in with his clever banter. We’ve now got the perfect game for New Year year festivities.

Malcolm Morris HoT gold plated earrings

I adore these beautiful gold earrings by Malcolm Morris, who was inspired by the Greek Galleries in the British Museum to create these articulated circular beauties that swing when worn in the ears.

Amberwood big pendant

It was great to see Polish designer Amberwood back in London, this time with some really big amber pendants. Love them.

Branch on the Park earrings

I always admire delicate gem jewellery in the Branch in the Park shop near Victoria Park, so it was good to see a big range on display at the East London Design Show.

These delightful fish and bird print mugs are by Sarah Hamilton, a friend I often chat to on twitter.

Snarfle liked the stand showcasing kinetic art from the Kinetica Museum – this sun trap is by Mike Booth.

And lastly this somewhat fuzzy close up is of some very cool jewels by Charlotte Valkeniers.

Middlesex University took over the upper floors of the Truman Brewery a few weeks ago to display the work of all their graduating creative arts students in one fell swoop, and I went along to discover the best of the crop. Here’s what caught my eye from fine art, fashion and photography.

Esther Evans Middlesex
This Memphis-tastic sculpture is by Esther Evans in Fine Art – I think it’s a commentary on gender stereotypes, but I like it purely from an aesthetic point of view. Call me shallow, but hey, I respond to curvy pink shapes (whoops, there I go following my gender’s supposed predispositions)

Spooky skull-faced teddy was part of an installation by Danielle Crawford-Lugay – again, not sure what it meant, but it was certainly eye-catching.

Faces from Haggerston Estate by Rosie Fowler
These backlit faces from a Haggerston Estate were made into an intriguing installation by Rosie Fowler.

There’s always someone being clever with china in a Chapman-stylee at the Free Range Shows – this year fine artist Joshua Page took on the mantle with this traditional icon being afforded a large penis.

I sadly missed the fashion show (wrong time, again) and instead perused a gallery of wooden stands adorned with look book photos of the graduating designer’s collections, some accompanied by samples of fabrics. The photographs were all beautiful and promoted the clothes in an exciting and contemporary way, but there were no clues as to who had created which garments, and no look books on display. What a shame, since for many visitors this would have been the only place they would have seen the student’s work. Here are snapshots of two students’ collections which I know well because I converse with them on instagram – both are knitwear students who are destined for great things.

Kirsty Anderton‘s amazing oversized skull jumper will be familiar to those who have read my coverage of the internal Middlesex fashion show, and I was excited to see that she had been inspired by the floral headdress I made a couple of weeks ago (and posted on instagram), adorning some of her catwalk models with similar flowers. (I am not imagining this by the way, she left a comment saying as much!) Her close friend Abbie Ridler (see above) is equally talented, this time creating colourful intarsia knitwear for men who like lairy clothing (an increasingly common sight, I think you’ll agree).

Middlesex Fashion Promotion
Last year FDSP had a great website, but this year I cannot find anything similar to showcase the students’ work – Fashion, Design, Styling and Promotion is a constantly changing discipline, which was reflected in the variety of work that was on display in the Truman Brewery. I was drawn to a few very different projects, including the interesting installation above.

This #hashtag artwork by Jessica Easting would be ideal for a cool brand of some kind: product, clothing, anything really!

Eleanor Vait has a thing for glasses: displaying this intriguing sculpture alongside photographs of girls, in glasses. No idea what it means but I like it.

Free Range shows 2013-jack lee
Middlesex photography degree produces some excellent work – these portraits of residents of London’s Brunswick Centre shot by Jack Lee are all posed against the backdrop of the building’s instantly recognisable brutalist windows. Shooting all your portraits in the same position is an idea that never gets old, and in this case serves to highlight the huge differences between each resident’s abode.

My favourite artworks by far were this Futuroid series of strange and wonderful prints by Tomas Soltonas. These collages successfully merge portrait photography with slabs of technology to disturbing effect. One Robert Palmer-esque lady appears part robot part human, and this Clipboard head, looks a bit like a Dr Who baddie in the making, no?

I was only drawn to a handful of artists from the Middlesex University illustration degree course this year, and one stand out graphic designer. Unfortunately, despite their name, the Communication Arts do not seem to have a website displaying their wares as they did last year (click here for a link in last year’s review), only this meagre showcase on the main university website. Hence it’s been impossible to track down any web presence for a few of the illustrators that I liked. I did try, honest!

Combining unusual materials (embroidery on a traditional yellow duster) and a unique outlook on the world (A Step-to-Step Guide on How to Make a Bonsai Kitten), Katie Glover-Price had put together a very strong display of beautiful illustrations.

An installation featuring super clever papercut artwork with backlit animation had been put together by Amber Cooper-Davies, but sadly the website given on her business cards doesn’t work (frequent readers of these graduate show reports will know that this is a major bug bear) – instead hunt her down on her blog.

Greta Mikalauskaite- neon building interior
Greta Mikalauskaite‘s neon building interior gives a taste of her (often cheeky) brightly coloured style, showcased on her simple but effective tumblr here.

Large scale book of buildings & figures by Alex Foster
These intricate landscapes from Alex Foster remind one of my instagram followers of Lowry, which is no bad thing. I love intricate artworks such as these, full of buildings and figures to discover, and I imagine he could make some brilliant children’s books. Alex also runs an illustrated t-shirt brand called Get Better Clothing.

Fernanda Alonso‘s narrative wall mural was an eye-catching feature piece to showcase her textured print work in simple black on white.

I’m always a sucker for good wall displays, and I love these evocative mono prints for a book titled The Quincunx by Genevieve Melaugh.

Jennifer Schauerte shred magazine
Finally, work by graphic designer Jennifer Schauerte stood out by miles. I got the impression that she’s been working professionally for some time, and the theme of her degree work is obviously close to her heart: snowboarding. On display were copies of multiple magazines, including Plank: a mountain guide for skibums, and Shred Magazine for snowboarders. I love her simple but effective use of collage, geometry, photography, still lives and typography, merging different techniques seamlessly across pages to create a pleasing flow to the design. This is what a really good graphic designer does well.

Amelia’s Magazine | Free Range Art & Design Show 2013: Week One Review

The graduate shows are upon us and that can only mean one thing… I’ll be heading down to the Truman Brewery on a weekly basis to discover the most inspiring new designers graduating in 2013. Due to the fact that I was off camping in rural Sussex last week (bliss) I only just made it along in time to view the first week’s showing at Free Range Graduate Shows. Sadly Somerset College was already packing up, but here’s the best of what I found elsewhere.

Suzanne Kugler at Coventry Uni
Fashion students from Coventry University had created an innovative display out of cardboard boxes, with exciting over-sized ceramic jewellery by Suzanne Kugler taking pole position in the window.

Perverted Penguins at Greenwich Uni
Next door University of Greenwich was showcasing the best of it’s new designers in multiple disciplines – I liked huge creative typography by Ben of Perverted Penguins.

African beads by King's Edogiawerie
In a dark corner an intriguing laser cut description of African beads had been made by the brilliantly named King’s Edogiawerie.

Stunning beaded accessories by Sophia Denny
Goldsmiths had taken over the largest area in the basement to display a plethora of different design ideas under the This is War moniker. I was attracted to stunning beaded accessories inspired by history by Sophia Denny Design.

With children and friends aplenty frolicking around her stand Fanny Bissa‘s clever and colourful tools to build emotional intelligence warranted a closer look: I can imagine small people in particular would love to play around with her chalkboard shapes, but their usage could also be adapted to adult situations – find out more on her elegantly designed blog, Learn to Solve, here.

Emily Sutcliffe at Southampton Solent
Finally, I was drawn to Emily Sutcliffe‘s 80s tastic fashion alphabet at Southampton Solent University, which runs a course specialising in Fashion Graphics.

It’s late I know, but I have just one more review left from a summer of graduate shows; the Free Range Art & Design Show Fine Art exhibition at the Truman Brewery. This is always a mixed bag but there were many things to delight at this year’s show.

Free Range Marjan Saberi, Renunciation
At Northumbria University show Marjan Saberi took a modern view of Renunciation with life size paintings grabbing the viewer at the entrance.

Free Range Max Harrison
It was not saying anything particularly new but I could not help but be drawn to Max Harrison’s huge splatter paint installation.

Sean Halcrow-Cook used wigs, extrusions and kitsch oddments to create an outsized site specific installation in the light well. It shouldn’t have worked but it somehow did.

Ryan Dovenor used delicate lines on black to create whirling sliced hypnotic illustrations.

Free Range Dogs, by Liam Sanders
Dogs were the theme for a large painting by Liam Sanders.

I particularly loved the hand screen printed posters for the Newcastle Fine Art Degree Show, where a certain abstract style prevailed that I was drawn to.

Phil Frankland’s globes of juicy colour were slashed and rearranged into oddly familiar shapes.

Joseph Christa Michael’s abstractions reminded me of paintings by Francis Bacon: fleshy with meat colouring.

Northbrook College put on another strong exhibition. I was very intrigued by this curious little button person by Traci Moss. She also stuffed and dressed a variety of large animals to bold effect.

Hannah Lucy Whitlock’s splurgy daubs tapped into a popular aesthetic this year.

Free range Laura Patience
These chewed-up sweets spilling out of a stuffed chick are a commentary on the use of colour to make the repugnant appealing, by Laura Patience.

Megan Ilet Mackie recycled old crockery for her toppling towers.

Free range Birds by Penni Pierce
These tactile ceramic birds are by Penni Pierce at University for the Creative Arts, Canterbury.

Abigail Winter pictured friends and family in a gigantic photorealist paintings.

Toby Lennox Hilton made pixelated art inspired by digital images gone wrong. Grrrr, I know this pain all too well.

Charlotte Lewis created this colourful fabric tunnel.

I really really loved these paintings by Becky Dodds, who is inspired by the transient nature of landscapes. The paint seems to be transforming in front of the viewer’s eyes and is just beautiful up close.

Betty Hall really opened her heart in this anecdotal collection of miniature artworks.

Arts University Bournemouth students were notable for their professional online presence: other fine art courses could learn a thing or two. Lydia Reeves‘ loving depictions of penises are not for those of a nervous disposition, but I find them oddly beautiful.

Kerry Fairclough’s kitsch paintings depict the everyday elements of life with deep affection. An Englishman’s Home is His Castle indeed.

For Sam Taylor Size Matters, in this surreal manifestation of strange creatures with peculiar phallas cavorting on an altar.

Finally, I fell for this moving light installation by Sophie Newton, with a projection on rounded objects that reminded me of eyeballs and jellyfish.

And so, viagra the 2011 graduates shows begin. My first invite was to the Havering College graduate fashion show just down the road at the Brick House in the Truman Brewery, for sale but I missed the entirety of it due to misinformation on arrival.

This was all I saw of the fashion show… the final parade.

Instead I discovered the wonders of the 3D Design department, side effects showing in the space around the corner next to The Big Chill Bar as part of this years Free Range Art and Design Show which has just kicked off with a two month round of graduate showcase exhibitions.

Sarah-Jane Warner is ‘challenging human interaction with physical objects through sight and touch’ with lovely ceramics in slightly varied curvaceous floramantic patterns with coloured interiors. She has also encased a table and the surrounding floor in a woven knit that questions the nature of a our surroundings.

Laura Mardell has made small bottles of bloody teeth which question ‘the coexistence of dreams and reality in products’. I have no idea what is meant by these strange phials but they are certainly intriguing. Her website says “Laura has even managed to modify sarcasm into design, which can be described as eclectic.” Definitely zany.

Tessa Doughty was perhaps the most prolific and inspired of the three that I discovered, aiming to work with ‘the perception and transformation of objects through patterns’ she’d created an ingenious glass coffee table with a sliding top section, some wonderful ceramic and glass egg shaped nesting bowls and a plethora of stackable perspex rings in bright colours.

Now Tessa and her classmates just need to work on their google ranking and get proper websites that make the most of their talent. All three girls have used wix to create very basic sites: am I the only person who really really dislikes wix as a free website platform? It’s clunky and flash driven which means that wix websites are hard to use and hard to find online – both of which are a massive no no for showing professional work.

Instead I recommend looking at any other number of website platforms that are free or low cost and easy to set up – try indexhibit for a very basic and clean looking website that actually works in search engines, Virb for a cheap but easy to build website that looks great or Cargo for a web hosting platform that also offers a large and vibrant online community.

The exhibition finishes tomorrow, Monday 6th June. What a find!
