Last Saturday east London hosted the very first Canine Games, a chaotic mishmash of dog parade, craft stalls and musical entertainment. Due to the recent heavy rain it was decided to host the doggy counterpart to the Olympics inside the Bethnal Green Working Mens Club – a decision that soon became rather difficult to manage. Just think dozens of slightly confused dogs in fancy dress and their owners all squashed into a tiny venue: the dog show just wasn’t going to work within these four walls.

Luckily the weather held for a bit and the decision was made to relocate temporarily to the patch of grass over the road. There the competitive element of the day was held, with awards going to various genres of dog: my favourite trophy went to a chihuahua dressed up as Lady Gaga in the celebrity look alike section, which included a number of arbitrary competitors, including an entrant who looked like Frank Sinatra ‘cos he’s got blue eyes’.

The Hackney Secular Singers serenaded the ‘Best Punk Dog‘ section, and then the skies opened again so everyone retreated indoors once more and I trundled off to look at the graduate exhibitions. Despite the weather there was a magnificent turnout so let’s hope it becomes a regular affair. In the meantime: enjoy these illustrations of The Canine Games (I wonder what happened to the Olympics inspired events?!)

Amelia’s Magazine | Easter 2013: Illustrated

Easter by Daniel Alexander
Easter by Daniel Alexander.

I don’t know about you but this feels like the least Eastery Easter for many years: normally the weather is becoming properly spring-like and the daffodils are blooming in abundance. In 2013 though, it still feels like the depths of a ridiculously long, cold, wet winter: and many animals are suffering due to the prolonged cold weather: sheep and lambs have been buried in snow drifts across the country, hedgehogs and other hibernating animals are unable to wake up because the weather is not warm enough yet, many birds and insects are unable to find food because the plants on which they feed are not yet in bloom and seabirds such as puffins are dying of starvation because they can’t eat enough to keep up their energy and keep themselves warm. And on that sobre note I present to you these Easter illustrations: all of them focused on pagan symbols that have been part of spring equinox celebrations the world over for thousands of years. Let’s hope new beginnings arrive soon.

Amelia’s Magazine | Album Review – Marissa Nadler: Marissa Nadler

Marissa Nadler by Avril Kelly
Marissa Nadler by Avril Kelly.

Marrisa Nadler’s 5th album came out this week. The Massachusetts born singer songwriter has been playing music since she was a teenager, viagra approved teaching herself guitar, viagra dosage 12 string, piano and organ with a little help from her older brother. Swoonsome melodies always come first, followed by metaphor-laden lyrical tales. Marissa studied illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design alongside a Masters Degree in Art Education, but the self expressive potential of music proved too big a pull to resist. She still creates art and sells watercolours, prints and handsewn pillows on Etsy, using it as a homespun way to raise funds for her music projects.

Using online fundraiser Kickstarter to raise cash to record her self titled album proved an unprecedented success, allowing Marissa to make a record that remains true to her creative vision. The album was recorded earlier this year at the Miner Street studios in Philadelphia with producer Brian McTear and self released on Box of Cedar Records, named after a song on her first record. Everyone who helped to fund it received a hand wrapped record parcel in the post as a thankyou.

Life, love and heartbreak, loss and death – all fragile human is found in the new album. From the crystal opening lines of In Your Lair, Bear…. ‘Where did you go, when the snow fell about you?‘ it’s obvious that this is an intensely personal album. ‘Like blood through your souls.’ Bears of course, are just a metaphor for human experience. Alabaster Queen tells the tale of a life that’s nearly drowned. The slow mournful strum of a guitar is the only thing that keeps us afloat.

The Sun Always Reminds Me Of You starts on a more positive note… the sun shining on a familiar walk… but that sunshine is not all good after all ‘there ain’t nothing but love songs on the radio.‘ There’s a cosmic countryish tinge to this, a squealing moog bouncing incongruously through the background.

In Mr. John Lee Revisited cements Marissa Nadler‘s reputation as a ‘mistress of the murder ballad’, singing of seductive red lips. But she’s running away again by Baby I will Leave in the Morning. ‘Baby you need to set me free‘ – key changes straining to get away from the melody. But she’s not leaving yet. ‘Come here… honey I don’t want to go away.’

There’s a rollicking undertow to Puppet Master, which was co written with Carter Tanton. Once more the seasons pin the lyrics in time and place. ‘Winter would come and nothing would move. Summer’s undone with all did I choose.’ She won’t ever do him wrong… ‘I was your pearl and I knew that you lied.’

Despite her angelic soprano Marissa Nadler will never succumb to what he wants her to be, never a Wind Up Doll. Light as a feather harmonies curl around a sparse wash of sound. ‘she will never be what you want her to be.’

A wobbling wall of synth opens Wedding. ‘I will wait for you to come around.’ Is she really still waiting? Somehow I don’t believe it, I think this album is the ultimate cathartic comeback. Doing things exactly as she would like, Marissa is fooling no one. This album is a masterpiece of that self expression she has spent so long searching for. Little King grew up not afar away. We’re in the autumn now but the suitcase is still being packed.

Breaking down In a Magazine, in public, but she has moved on – ‘my hands are tied, the rain falls, you look like someone I used to know‘ – maybe, though the memories remain. The album ends on Daisy, Where Did You Go? – Marissa still apparently stuck with phantom limbs in ‘this light of woe‘ but nothing scares Daisy. And thus ends a beautifully elliptical album that I’ve had on repeat for weeks.

Marissa Nadler plans to tour Europe in the autumn so keep an eye on this space. What a wonderful discovery. Now I just need to listen to the other albums.

Amelia’s Magazine | Album Review – Emmy the Great: Virtue

I’ve been a fan of Emma-Lee Moss for oh so long. And she hasn’t failed me yet.

Emmy The Great by Lea Rimoux.

Virtue opens with the scratchy sounds of an orchestra tuning up in the oddly titled Dinosaur Sex… it’s a slow and understated start to Emmy’s latest album. When her voice appears it is at its lightest delicate best, clinic gradually curling into a delicate tune about the perils of a modern day life spent in front of a computer screen. Presumably the Dinosaur Sex of the title refers to an outmoded form of human contact.

Emmy The Great - Jo Chambers
Emmy The Great by Jo Chambers.

By Woman, unhealthy a Woman, erectile A Century of Sleep Emmy has gained a stronger voice to tell us a tale of domestic slavery, to ‘sew a dress till the pieces mesh’. She has such a marvellous way with words, but what’s so gorgeous about Virtue is the way she has also embraced a fuller sound to accompany her ever clever lyrics. Current single Iris is an early high, a driving drumbeat accompanying the simple chords and twinkling synth which drift slowly into this new bigger sound. I reviewed Iris a few weeks ago.

Paper Forest (in the Afterglow of Rapture) reveals in crystal clear high notes the aftermath of the relationship she lost to the church. Cassandra is a simple track that calls to mind the Emmy of before.

Emmy the Great by Sam Parr

Creation starts with dreary minor chords, then reverts to a more upbeat major sound, swinging between the two as ‘she wants to know if there is a narrative’ for ‘she needs a reason for believing’. The dips and turns of the music echo the natural paths of any relationship. Sylvia has a driving disco backbeat, even as it explores stormy emotions: ‘if this is life then why does it feel like I am far away… like I am dreaming.’

Exit Night/Juliet’s Theme heralds a familiar Emmy type melody of yore, exploring notions of fairy tales, ghosts and other worlds where different worlds exist. In North Emmy is led by the needle, presumably on the record player. Trellick Tower is a song about the days when she was alone in West London, recently un-engaged and single once again. It’s a very small song compared with the others, with just a piano for company, leaving room for Emmy’s voice to meander into the ether.

Virtue remains true to Emmy’s very personal existential wanderings, but with added intrigue and oomph supplied by experimental musical accompaniments that go well beyond her original folk noodlings. What’s so wonderful is that her lyrics can be perceived in so many different ways – above are my personal interpretations but for Emmy’s explanations visit this track by track rundown on the Guardian website.

Lovely Emmy is flying up the charts with Virture and with good reason – she just keeps getting better and better. Virtue is out now on Close Harbour Records. You’d best catch her on tour soon.
