Tonight’s the night. After what has quite possibly been the longest warm up for anything to happen ever, seven years in the making, the 30th Olympic Games launches tonight in spectacular style in East London with a lavish opening ceremony directed by Danny Boyle. I’ve only just recovered from my Diamond Jubilee excitement, too.

Now this might come as a massive surprise to my friends, but I don’t care much for sport. I do, however, love the Olympics. There’s something pretty magical about it, don’t you think? The dramatic opening ceremony, the fastest, strongest people in the world coming together in one place and Russian weightlifters walking into walls. I’m still terribly upset that Disco Dancing hasn’t been recognised as an Olympic sport, but I’ll be writing to the IOC again re: this oversight.

Here, in no particular order, are a few things that have got me going so far:

• I (sort of) love that florists in Stoke-on-Trent are threatened with legal action by the International Olympic Committee for making replica rings out of tissue paper and Bostik.

• I love *grits teeth* listening to berks on the tube moaning about how busy the city is, as if London is a sleepy little hamlet suddenly invaded by Charlton Heston and the cast of Ben Hur. You’ve had seven years to moan about it, pals.

• I know that we’ll never compare to China and their fastidious approach to drumming at the opening of the 2008 Beijing games. Our highlights include a farmyard of animals, the Coronation Street theme tune and Boris Johnson slobbering as he waves a flag (I know I’ll be eating my words come 9pm).

• I love the mindboggling stories of the piggish sponsors; the ludicrousness that McDonald’s are the only vendor allowed to flog chips. Please.


The Olympic Park by Sam Parr

• I love that we’re hosting the XXX Olympic Games. Arf.

• I love that we haven’t even performed the opening ceremony and we’ve already offended everybody in North Korea and Welsh footballer Joe Allen, who’s listed as English in the Olympic programme.

• I love how brands fall over themselves to be the official provider – Official Cereal Bar had me proverbially ROFLing. I’m just hoping that the Official Ironing Board Provider comes forward soon.

Nevertheless, no doubt we’ll look back at how wonderful the next few weeks ill inevitably be. In celebration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games on home turf, here’s a wonderful selection of illustrated images by some of our favourite contributors, and a few other surprises along the way!

It’s only in the past few years that I have acquired an interest in contemporary dance, a fact I put down to my boyfriend’s refined cultural tastes. So when The Place invited me to the latest instalment of 2FacedDance I jumped at the chance.

The evening comprised of three very different dance pieces by different choreographers, performed by the same troupe of dancers, who must surely have been absolutely exhausted by the end. The first piece by Tom Dale – named Subterrania utilised the whole company and was by far my favourite piece. Against a backdrop of music by dubstep pioneer Shackleton the men (for they were all men) by turns shuffled and leapt across the stage like latter day urchins – in faded dandy jackets and dress shirts. The choreography effectively combined elements of many dance styles, including break dancing and capoeira, with the dancers climbing on top of each other, dismantling into formations and recombining for a grand finale dance off. I could watch this dance over and over again.

Next up was a piece that may or may not have been sponsored by the OlympicsFreddie Opuku-Addaie‘s Politicking Oath was a humorous piece that saw the three dancers by turns goading, competing against and helping each other as they explored the psyche of professional sport. It featured the clever use of sports related moves and included the use of some strange props, including an alarm clock and a pig’s head mask.

The In the Dust of the title was the final piece, by Tamsin Fitzgerald. I hadn’t really thought about it beforehand, but yes, there was a lot of dust involved. Sitting in the front row I struggled to keep a clear throat, so god knows how the dancers managed, as they bounced up and down in great clouds of what I presume was chalk dust. The emotion of loss was writ large in the evocative moves of the dancers.

Many of the dancers with 2FacedDance have trained extensively in different forms of dance, as well as touring with pop stars on the commercial backing dancer circuit, and their expertise certainly shows. But throughout the performances it was by one dancer in particular that I remained transfixed – the tiny powerhouse that is Hugh Stanier. With ginger dreads flying, he embodied his dance moves in a way that was totally hypnotic.

Amelia’s Magazine | Edgeland – the lost landscape of Hackney marshes

Artist Sally Mumby-Croft has created a film about the sad loss to the local community of the site being used for the 2012 Olympic development. Despite musch protest, an area once available to everyone in the area has been fenced off and is now patrolled by security guards. The film shows the quietness and openness of the landscape, with voiceovers provided by local people, whose articulate commentary brings to life how important the space has been to residents, and how important it is that people have access to spaces that are free of branding and agensa, spaces that they can interpret themselves.

Could you tell me a little about the people who provide the voiceovers? How did you meet them?

The people in the film inhabit the space in question, Charlie Charman participated in Manor Garden Allotments (now no more), Iain Sinclair is a long time Hackney resident and I use the term in slight hesitation to avoid pigeon holing anyone a psycho-geographer, earlier this year Sinclair wrote a less than glowing review of the Olympics in the London Book Review, which resulted in his well documented ban from Hackney Libraries by the mayor Jules Pipe.

Ella and Amy are local residents of East London who stumbled upon the allotments one day whilst cycling through the relative untamed wilderness of the Hackney canal system. Johnnie Walker is the manager of the football at Hackney Marshes. Xavier [Zapata] and I met Charlie through the manor garden website, Iain Sinclair through Xavier’s Participation at various local demos.

Why are the issues discussed in your film so important?

The issues are so important because it is a matter of freedom in public space. Whilst this space look unused it has long been home to a variety of activities from impromptu art galleries to refrigerator mountains, the mass football related events on a Sunday morning (fulfilling all the Olympic criteria of youth participating in multi-cultural activities). It is a space where you had freedom to roam without being told how to act. Now a blue barbed fence dominates the landscape. Local residents lost open green spaces and their children have no where to play – we aim to tackle obesity and the government take away their nearest green spaces.

The marshes and the allotments were given to the people of east London in perpetuity as a gift to apologise for the impact of the second world war on that area of London – the marshes developed out of the blitz rubble and the allotments provided food for families for at least 40 years. The land was obtained for the Olympics through compulsive purchase orders.

The project was also about listening to voices who are often marginalised or disregarded in typical media coverage or are not included at all in decision processes that affect everyday quality of life

What are the drawbacks of using this site for the 2012 Olympics? What will be lost?

What will be lost is a place to express yourself unrestrained, as a number of the interviewees mention in the film. The drawbacks are the loss of green spaces, the leaking of toxic materials into the water-system and thriving communities.

Why did you decide not to show people on camera and instead focus on the landscape?

I decided to focus solely on the landscape because I wanted to explore and express how we romanticise landscape, I wanted to turn the Olympic reports on their heads by showing that this is a place that is not unused, but a place free from gentrification requirements, to be clearer regeneration does not need to mean gentrification or the dispersal of local inhabitants.

Who or what are you influenced by? Did any specific influences contribute to this film?

I was influenced by the navigations of Iain Sinclair around a cityscape, his reading of graffiti and marks left by those who have been before that on first glance what looks abandoned can provide valuable insights to the world around us.

Doris Lessing, especially The Grass is Singing for her incredible use of language and skill at embedding the landscape as if it heaves with the political tension that soaks the air of the novel’s settings. 

Steve McQueen’s Hunger and Jeremy Deller for their revisiting of past historical events resulting in fresh attention on how events potentially unfold.

Particularly good websites for my project was the site GamesMonitor, a fantastic site that provides multiple articles on the state of the Olympics across the world.

Now she has illustrated the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale The Fir Tree, the story of how a small sapling is so anxious to reach maturity that he misses the best part of the present. It’s an ancient fable which is beautifully retold in Sanna‘s inimitable patterned illustrations, and all bound together in a fabulous fabric book with a very special gold foiled cover.

Best for lovers of craft:
Anyone who loves colourful intarsia knits or modern patchwork quilts will be familiar with the work of Kaffe Fassett, who moved to this country from California many decades ago to pursue a career as a painter, and subsequently revolutionised contemporary craft. He was particularly popular in the 1980s, when he influenced a whole generation of crafters (including me), and now he’s put his extraordinary story down in print. The book’s publication chimes perfectly with a major retrospective at the Fashion and Textile Museum, which will take place from 22 March – 29 June next year.

Best for children:
Sylvester and the New Year is a seasonal story that is a bit different form the usual fare, featuring a bearded old man that you might not be so familiar with. The book is based on a traditional folk tale from the continent, where Saint Sylvester wakes only to ensure the old year finishes and the New Year arrives. Emmeline Pidgen‘s beautiful illustrations tell this story in a way that will appeal to young children wonderfully.

Baking it seems, is all the rage. And everywhere I turn I bump up against yet another review for a book about cakes, or bread. But what to do for the person who already knows how to do all of usual stuff? Who wants a book a little different to those lining the shelves of our high street stores? Well, I’ve got just the ticket – Home Baked – an absolutely beautiful tome about artisanal Scandinavian baking. The timing couldn’t be better, what with our current obsession about all things Danish. This scrumptious book by organic farmer Hanne Risgaard is chock full of beautiful photographs and techniques for creating unusual nordic breads and pastries. And if you give the gift maybe you’ll get to try the outcome…

After weeks and months of torrential rain it’s a wonder that climate change is still so far down the agenda: it shouldn’t be. We need to be talking about why extreme weather events are harassing our planet, and we need to be taking action, which is where the work of designers comes in. Designers and illustrators play an extremely important part in telling the stories that must persuade humans to change their ways. Cause and Effect: Visualising Sustainability, is a timely collection of inspiring graphics. It also happens to include the poster I created in collaboration with Mia Overgaard for Climate Camp a few years ago.

Everyone knows the iconography of London’s tube: the Roundel must be one of the most recognisable emblems around the world. Now a new book documents the creations of a host of famous artists who were challenged with the task of reinterpreting the sign. Amongst recognisable renditions of the roundel are images that mutate it beyond recognition, lose it in patterns or adopt a humorous approach. The Roundel is perfect for anyone who loves London and it’s sometimes irascible underground system, and it is now available as a deluxe clothbound edition.

No one can have escaped coverage of the Olympics this summer, and now Harry Bloom, a talented young illustration graduate whom I discovered at the shows last year, has taken on the theme with this fun puzzle book – Where’s Mo? – which features illustrations of a selection of great British sporting events in which Mo Farrah and other sporting friends are hidden. Can you find them in the crowds?

Last season I was incredibly gutted to miss the Cooperative Designs presentation – such were the glowing reports on our website. But in my enthusiasm I actually turned up too early this time, viagra buy got turned away, buy ate a Pret sandwich… and then missed most of what turned out to actually be a catwalk show on repeat.

Descending some stairs we were asked to sit in a darkened vault but my photographer’s sixth sense directed me instead to stand in a separate photographers box, where the models paused for a few seconds in somewhat brighter conditions.

This was a collection inspired by 90s rave culture, Drum n Bass and the contemplative industrial photography of Thomas Struth, which meant that the oversized silhouette of Cooperative Designs came in industrial tones of grey and beige stripes combined with fluoro highlights in tie detailing, visors and threaded hair accessories.

There was lots of asymmetrical patterning, floppy hooded jumpers, boxy baggy tops and knit dresses tiered with baggy pouches. Lacy see through knitwear recalled the combat trouser shapes so beloved of 90s dancers. Hats by Noel Stewart were tall and floppy like a gnome’s or featured ear flaps and visors – questionable styles that were somehow rendered infinitely desirable. A wide knitted skirt was particularly cute, and were the little boots by Flip Flop, customised by Cooperative Designs with extravagant orange soles.

Of any designers that I love I can actually imagine myself wearing Cooperative Designs. Their clever knitwear by it’s very nature being supremely flattering to the shape of a real women. Thankfully, they make a point of picking their models to reflect their customer.

On my way out I was given a brilliant press release: informative, well written and protected in a cardboard envelope that even I would struggle to lose. Best of all, it came with my very own piece of painted plywood jewellery by Corrie Williamson, as featured in the collection. More designers could learn from such professionalism on the press release frontier.

There was lots of asymmetrical patterning, floppy hooded jumpers, boxy baggy tops and knit dresses tiered with baggy pouches. Lacy see through knitwear recalled the combat trouser shapes so beloved of 90s dancers. Hats by Noel Stewart were tall and floppy like a gnome’s or featured ear flaps and visors – questionable styles that were somehow rendered infinitely desirable. A wide knitted skirt was particularly cute, as were the little boots by Flip Flop, customised by Cooperative Designs with extravagant orange soles.

Of any designers that I love I can actually imagine myself wearing Cooperative Designs. Their clever knitwear is by it’s very nature supremely flattering to the shape of a real women. Thankfully, they make a point of picking their models to reflect their customer.

On my way out I was given a brilliant press release: informative, well written and protected in a cardboard envelope that even I would struggle to lose. Best of all, it came with my very own piece of painted plywood jewellery by Corrie Williamson, as featured in the collection. More designers could learn from such professionalism on the press release frontier.

Former Amelia’s Magazine art editor Sally Mumby-Croft put together this stunning movie reminder of the launch party for ACOFI with a little help from 6 Day Riot. I hope you enjoy a tour of Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration, rx as seen at the Bunker Cafe and Scout Hut at 123 Bethnal Green Road on Friday 28th January 2011. It features Susie Bubble, troche cakes by Lily Vanilli, sneak peaks inside the book and lots of sketching by the illustrators who helped out on the day.

I asked Sally a few questions about how she put the movie together:

What where you looking for when you filmed this?
When filming I’m often looking for the quiet moments in between moments of action, whether this be an illustrator lost in concentration, the movement of a pen, the simple action of making tea or a DJ pressing play. I wanted to capture the moments which were unique to an Amelia’s Magazine book launch.

What was your favourite moment of the party?
Apart from assisting Amelia and Matt Bramford with the set up in the morning and watching 123 heave under the number of guests who turned up for the book launch, my favourite moment of the party was when Amelia and Harriet (of Tatty Devine) cut the fantastic cake made by Lily Vanilli and we had a chance to taste the prettiest cake I’ve ever seen!

Who else have you made short videos for?
Recently I’ve been really lucky to work with the photographer and filmmaker Ben Toms, over the past three months I’ve worked on videos for JW Anderson, Edun and Craig Lawrence.



Outside of fashion film, I’ve worked with the fantastic team behind the upcoming documentary Just Do It: get off your arse and change the world and assisted on the editing of their Grow Heathrow short:

What else are you working on at the moment?
I’m thinking about the possibility of expanding upon Edgeland, a short documentary I made with Xavier Zapata in 2009. Edgeland consists of a series of interviews with Hackney residents who have been displaced by the Olympic development site in Stratford. Apart from that I have an idea for a new short film…
