Amelia’s Magazine | Christmas Gift Ideas 2012: Best Design Gifts For Women

by hand london elisalex dress
The Elisalex dress from By Hand London.
Looking for some last minute gift ideas to please the lady who loves good design, handmade goods and occasionally creating her own? Well go no further…

It was with much happiness that I ran into Elisalex de Castro Peake at the recent East London Design Show – daughter of ethical fashion doyenne Orsola de Castro and one time creator of ethical shoe brand Nina Dolcetti – Elisalex is back with a brand new project based on her love of hand sewing. Easy to follow patterns come in a lovely box designed by business partner Charlotte Hintzen.

by hand london charlotte skirt
The first two patterns available are classic shapes named after the founders, and they will be adding to these soon. In the meantime if someone is kind enough to buy you the fab peplum skirt pattern, then why not join the Charlotte skirt sewalong in the New Year? For those who are novices to sewing the site includes ace tutorials such as how to make a DIY skirt.

Lauren Baker skull Frankie
Some of Lauren Baker’s more extravagant creations might require you to remortgage your home, but this artwork is reasonably priced. Frankie, above, was inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead. He is cast from a human skull and then painstakingly hand decorated with beads and acrylic.

TOFT crochet_hippo_amigurumi_pattern
At the Toft Alpaca Shop find a one stop shop to buy the yarns and the designs to create cute crocheted Amigurumi toys – or commission their crafters to make one of the little guys for you.

Bianca Green BOLD iphone cover
On the gadget front this gorgeous abstract BOLD design by Bianca Green fits perfectly into our ongoing love affair with all things tribal.

dom and ink iphone skin ophelia
Or go for something a bit more illustrative: how about contributor Dom & Ink’s fabulous portrait of Ophelia on an iphone skin? It’s bound to be a talking point.

Batter My Heart Dom and Ink
dom and ink batter my heart zine
dom and ink batter my heart zine
I’m also loving Dom & Ink’s Batter My Heart zine – chock full of great illustrations, wry observations and insights on the theme of relationships. It’s guaranteed to appeal to anyone who is or has been heartbroken.

Rebecca Desnos Petal Scarf Wrapped
On an eco conscious tip take a look at these beautifully crafted bamboo scarves by Rebecca Desnos: each geometric design is handmade with plant dyes using a Japanese technique called Shibori.

lowie fingerless gloves
And I adore these eye catching merino wool fingerless gloves by ethical woollen brand Lowie. They are decorated with an interesting thistle design and are long enough to cover your entire wrist area for extra warmth.

chelsea doll Red Heart Bobble Trapper Hat
On the more affordable front, I really love this cute woollen trapper hat with fleecy lining at Chelsea Doll.

thriftola lola hanger
Leona runs Thriftola, a website dedicated to bringing you the best in vintage gems. She was formerly the brains behind much loved jewellery brand Lady Luck Rules OK and she has finally decided to make a new product: meet Lola. Lola is a stylish hand illustrated clothes hanger designed to showcase your favourite garment to perfection.

COCO BOHEME RECYCLED CARDBOARD ANIMAL HANGER
Or if you fancy something a bit sillier you could look to these Coco Boheme hangers, made out of strong recycled cardboard and printed in environmentally friendly ink.

emma hamshare
Fashion brand äelska specialises in beautifully made collars, and I absolutely adore this buttery soft sequinned version that would look great with a party outfit, here modelled by creator Emma Hamshare, who once upon a time helped make Amelia’s Magazine in print.

carmen woods clutch
For bag fans look no further than the new range of British made goods by Carmen Woods, all made using the finest leathers. I love the bright pattern on this clutch.

Kelly Moore Libby Camera Bag
And for the serious photography fan, check out these newly discovered Kelly Moore camera bags: incredibly stylish totes to keep your equipment safe. Above is the Kelly Moore Libby Camera Bag. So want one to cart my SLR around in during LFW!

pumpkin sputnk notebook betty
Thinking about some luxury stationery? How about this gorgeous hand stitched journal, which comes with a timeless photographic hydrangea design, by Pumpkin Sputnik.

Melly bee notebookswrapped
Or something simpler: Mellybee makes slim pocket-sized notebooks, screenprinted by hand onto 100% recycled card with a delightful anchor design.

Who Runs the World Girls by Studio Her
Finally and by no means least, may I draw your attention to this genius screenprint from Studio Her? It first caught my eye at Sarah Julia Clark’s graduate exhibition and she was kind enough to send me one in all its golden feminist glory: now you or your loved one can own your very own version for she has finally set up an online Studio Her shop. Hell yeah: Beyonce for the wall!

Amelia’s Magazine | Christmas Gift Ideas 2012: Best for Babies by Independent Designers

slugs and snails tights snarfle
This Christmas I find myself with child for the first time – there he is above – and so naturally thoughts have turned to gifts that babies of Snarfle‘s age (give or take) might like to receive. Maybe it’s cos I live in design central (aka east london) but I am also lucky enough to have met some amazing kidswear designers in the past few months. Some live near here, and others have been introduced to me via social media – either way, it’s time to share the goodness. And I can promise you there will be not a pastel pink or baby blue in sight.

slugs and snails tights
First up – the amazingly designed and very practical tights for boys by Slugs and Snails. Snarfle was kindly sent some pairs to test drive and he has been living in them. Not only do they keep him super cosy but they ensure he is as mobile as he can be just as he is learning to crawl, and they feature the best patterns… spiders and spooks and skulls ‘n’ crossbones.

mini magpie pom pom dungarees
Next up, I am incredibly taken by Mini Magpie upcycled garments, which are hand made in London from old jumpers sourced from markets, car boots and charity shops. Not only is this a super ethical and individual way to dress your child, but Mini Magpie designs are fab.

corby tindersticks Nut_E_Smith
When is a plush for an adult and when does it suit a child? *Muses* I guess the best appeal to both. This Corby Tindersticks pillow mate is a quizzical character with a tiny head and a huge belly.

Bryony-Crane-Personalised-Dinosaur-Baby-Clothes-Dactyl
Bryony Crane is an Amelia’s Magazine illustrator who has turned her hand to decorating baby clothes with cute dinosaurs. Get yours personalised too!

change and go baby changing mat
It’s a tad pricier than your basic models but this change and go baby mat from Two Red Trees doubles as a place to store baby essentials – and boasts a great design.

kyna boutique liandlo hansel and gretel
If you are looking for a one stop shop to find great clothing for little ones why not check out Kyna Boutique, which stocks loads of great labels and gives very clear sizing instructions too. I particularly love the Liandlo brand, which features really bright playful print designs: unfortunately I didn’t read the sizing instructions at all (dur) and so this fab Hansel & Gretel babygro awaits Snarfle. He’s growing so damn fast it won’t be long.

baberoo giraffe tights
I love a good patterned legging and so naturally Snarfle does too (until he’s old enough to decide otherwise at any rate). Kyna Boutique stocks these fab Baberoo tights, in a giraffe design: get in, they even feature a tail.

oh baby london been inside for 9 months babygro
Oh Baby London is based barely more than a stones throw away from where I live in Brick Lane, yet I passed by for many years and gave it barely a second glance. Now I realise how brilliant Hannah’s designs are: the classic Been Inside for 9 Months was a prized hand me down that looked especially good paired with a witch’s hat on Halloween… and they make great leggings too. Throughout December Oh Baby London is running a daily half price special.

oh baby london fair isle playsuit
And how much do I heart this Sarah Lund inspired Christmas onesie? Modelled here by Snarfle‘s friend Eddie.

little night owl giraffe, owl horse toy
A twitter friend recommended that I check out homemade soft toys by Little Night Owl, saying that they are simply beautifully made. Why not commission her, quick?!

amelia baby crochet blanket by Kate Selene
I have been hankering after a bright crochet granny blanket like the one available on Two Red Trees for some time. This design is fortuitously called Amelia, hand crocheted by Kate Selene.

ricecracker_plush toy noodoll
Now for another plush: Snarfle may well find he has a special Noodoll playmate not unlike this one in his Christmas stocking come December 25th. It’s super soft and ever so snuggly – perfect for a little one.

Lettie Belle_ahoy-there-play-felt-set
Lettie Belle works with recycled textiles and I love her creative play felt sets. A lovely alternative to the garish plastic toys available everywhere you look.

this is lullaby waistcoat baby gro check
Snarfle was 6 weeks old when my baby brother got married and I had no idea where to look for something smart. I wish I had known about This is Lullaby, where you can pick up a bespoke babygro with waistcoat for a great price.

ruff and huddle please thankyou t-shirt
Ruff & Huddle clothing is currently aimed at 2-7 year olds but I’ll slip it in here as Lucy Brice, the lovely lady behind it, is one of the Mothers Meeting crew, and she’s ace. Think mega cool illustrations – can’t wait to see how the brand develops.

The Bright Company slim jyms
The Bright Company is another new kidswear brand set up by one of the extended Mothers Meeting family. They specialise in super comfy jersey pyjamas – Slim Jyms – printed with the bespoke Linea Hexx print in eco friendly inks. Everything is made in the UK.

hokolo reindeer top
Hokolo does the cutest bodysuit & top with a snowflake reindeer design and a puffed up red nose detail.

Hokolo baby gift set christmas rattle babygro
I also love the quintessentially British Hokolo hand crocheted orb rattle.

Hedgehog lamp by white rabbit england
Looking for a quirky nightlight? How about this fab bone china Herbert the Hedgehog lamp from White Rabbit England?

the big forest felt toys
At Craft Central I fell in love with these felted creatures by The Big Forest – they can be hung on the door to your child’s room, and my what a talking point they would be. Especially the badger.

Madi Illustration Santa's little monster
Finally – news of a competition for the kids: Amelia’s Magazine contributor Madi Illustration invites you to show off your colouring in skills and be in with a chance to win one of her illustrated books: all the information can be found on this link.

I do hope that this Christmas you will check out the fantastic wares from these independent designers and shops. There’s more to come… hold tight cos it takes AGES to get these blogs together.

Amelia’s Magazine | A Review of the 2012 Art Car Boot Fair

art car boot fair May 2012
This year’s Art Car Boot Fair was a fantastically hot affair with a distinct lack of shade: not really the place for a newborn Snarfle, who travelled on my chest wrapped up in a leopard print scarf and shaded by a brolly. Lovely though this weather is, plenty of burning tarmac and reflective car surfaces ensured a quick whip around the stalls. Us Brits eh? we’re so bad at coping with extremes of temperature.

art car boot fair May 2012 - pure evil
Despite the heat the fair was busy, with more mainstream punters than usual which is undoubtedly a better thing for artists, the usual east end pissheads are probably more interested in conviviality than the act of buying. Of particular note was the vast queue winding round the Pure Evil orange van – clearly demonstrating The Apprentice effect. I’m glad to see Charlie finally raking it in.

Here’s what else I saw:

Bob & Roberta Smith was signing ironic placards, accompanied by three lovely girls in well advised wide brimmed hats.

Peter Blake was selling special Jubilee prints, one of which was purchased as a first investment artwork for Snarfle by his doting dad.

Ian Dawson was touting crazy colourful sculptures.

There is an interesting confluence of fine art and street art at the moment and there is no better place to see this in action than at the Art Car Boot Fair – where so many forms of high, low, street and performance art exist happily side by side. Roll on 2013. Can we have some shade please?

Amelia’s Magazine | Favourite Christmas Indie Tunes for 2012: listen to the best here!

christmas olive grove by bex bourne
Christmas Olive Grove by Bex Bourne, based on As A Child I Awoke by Jo Mango.

A hugely successful Christmas tune is the holy grail for many musicians: just think how many times Fairytale of New York has been played. With royalties like that you’d never need to work again, not that this is the only motivating factor for the majority of musicians. It would just be nice, wouldn’t it, to have a song played every year… welcomed back like a much missed friend and enjoyed once more as if it were new. All of which is great because it means that every time the Christmas season swings around there is a host of brilliant new themed tunes to add to the mix, each hoping for a slice of immortality.

One release that is raising money for charity is the Olive Grove Records EP which features three original recordings and a cover of that famous Muppets song One More Sleep ’til Christmas.

For Folk's Sake it's Christmas 2012
For Folk’s Sake it’s Christmas 2012 cover illustrated by Sarah Oxley.

For Folk’s Sake It’s Christmas returns with another album featuring an absolutely stellar mix of tunes by the likes of Goodnight Lenin, Boat to Row and many others I don’t know but probably should. If you buy one thing this season make it this: the hard copy album has long since sold out but you can get the digital version for a piddling £7 and all profits go to the Evelina Children’s Hospital. It’s also worth downloading previous versions too.

Other returnees are Tim Wheeler and Emmy the Great, who have created a new video to celebrate their Zombie Christmas, just one track from last year’s fab Christmas album. Armed only with an assortment of decorations they must defend themselves from their foes, mid gig.

Kate Nash adopts that most seasonal of instruments, the sleigh bell, for Faith, her lo fi paen to the end of a tough year. It’s a taster of her new grungey sound, with a bass driven melody that segues into some pretty retro style harmonies.

Holiday Joy by Jacqueline Valencia
Holiday Joy by Jacqueline Valencia.

One of my favourite new tracks this season is a cover of Mary Margaret O’Hara’s Evermore by Cold Specks, a gloriously cosy song that makes me want to curl up next to a roaring log fire.

Tracey Thorn has released a collection of Christmas songs entitled Tinsel & Lights which comes accompanied with an innovative bit of marketing: open the doors on this virtual advent calendar to find a series of links leading to exclusive material. I like Joy… which is a self-penned tale of defiant seasonal celebration and In the Cold Cold Night is suitably frosty.

In the Cold Cold Night by-Christine-Charnock
In the Cold Cold Night by Christine Charnock. Tracey Thorn’s ‘In the Cold, Cold Night’ has dark and mysterious undertones to it which I wanted to reflect in my illustration response. The song creates an atmosphere of longing and loneliness, and a determination to find companionship in whatever way possible.

You can always bank on Darren Hayman for something a bit different: this year’s seasonal ditty concerns Oliver Cromwell‘s efforts to ban the festive occasion. He failed, luckily.

A really sweet video accompanies Dog is Dead‘s cover of Paul McCartney‘s classic Wonderful Christmastime.

Dog is Dead - Wonderful Christmastime Music Illustration by Sharon Farrow
Dog is Dead – Wonderful Christmastime by Sharon Farrow. I tried to take elements of the song and I wanted to include several Christmassy things: reindeer, snow, the tree, crackers, along with the humorous elements of the video. Hence the Christmas jumpers and the veneration of the humble (but essential Christmas delight!) brussel sprout. Where would be without them this time of year? The Christmas jumpers are also a nod to the Save the Children Christmas jumper campaign.

Tender Trap‘s Christmas tune Leaving Christmas Day tells the tale of a girl who discovers that her boyfriend is a Creationist Christian.

The Other Guys is an A Cappella choir from St Andrews University and their Christmas Gets Worse Every Year is a beautifully sung reminder that sometimes nothing beats a classic bit of choral singing at Christmas time.

The Voluntary Butler Scheme have released seasonal melody Quinzhee (Building Us A House Out Of Snow) with a grainy film of wintery figures building an igloo.

Katy Edelsten illustrates The Voluntary Butler Scheme – House out of Snow. I wanted to create something that mixed the breezy tone of the song with the simple lyrics, I settled on the castle made of snow because i thought it captured both the the air of the song and the dreamy-Beach Boys-esque haze of the lyrics. The colours and naive style were also executed for this reason.

Dan Croll gets into the spirit with his cover of Low‘s Just Like Christmas, accompanied by a kitsch video in which he smears his face in chocolate and luxuriates in a bubble bath whilst wearing a woolly jumper and smoking a pipe. Go on, watch it. It’s Christmas time everyone! Enjoy x

Katy Edelsten illustrates Dan Croll - 'Just Like Christmas'
Katy Edelsten illustrates Dan Croll – Just Like Christmas. I was inspired by the artist himself- as the video is pretty captivating! I wanted something quite whimsical, with no line breaks, as the lyrics repeat and continue. I used a continuous line, in conjunction with pale colours, to depict the artist as Father Christmas. Inspired by the song (and Movember perhaps) I incorporated the song title into Dan Croll’s beard.
