Shh, adiposity I know that the D&AD New Blood exhibition was held absolutely months ago… but I would rather play catch up than leave all this talent behind. And besides, this blog was all prewritten – I just needed to post the bugger. Here then are the best of the graphic designers that I found, with possibly a few illustrators thrown in too as it can be hard to distinguish between the two at times.

There was some wonderful work at Bath School of Art and Design: illustrations for The Outsider by Albert Camus illustrated by Dawn Cooper produced some beautiful prints.

I thought Charles Van Der Essen‘s Atom self portrait poster was rather wonderful, as was his primary coloured beetle waving a spanner on a BMX bike.

At American Intercontinental I liked David Otokpa‘s Eggs (Humanity), a photo of many sized eggs to represent the similarities of all humans.

From Middlesex University Juliana Roldao had produced Orishas, a beautiful screenprinted book in barely there neons and black.

At Nottingham Trent Uni Christine Harrison‘s Elton the Abominable Snowman and zoetrope caught my eye.

Over at Huddersfield I liked Unleashed illustrations by Samuel Jones, which were rendered in a very basic colour range to great success.

A very similar colour palette was used by Aaron Vohra, who tackled people in graphics with a faintly 50s style.

At the University of Bedfordshire the force of Nobrow was strong: especially for Zane Aldere, who produced a hand scene printed book that tells four versions of Little Red Riding Hood in concertina form.

Julia Kisselmann had produced a lovely series of hand screenprinted prints, Transmutation, inspired by patterns in nature.

I do love a bit of a wild card: at Loughborough University Amy Collins showed a purple hippo and featured bird from her Collin Banana Circus project – she hopes to go into animation.

Carolyn Bayley‘s Bertie the Ickle Pickle Bean for a book by Rosie Collins reminded me of the simplicity of Simone Lia‘s work.

There are so many to choose from, where on earth do you start when you set out to buy a print for the wall? Well, here’s my run down of personal favourites – including work from artists I’ve known since college and fresh discoveries that have won me over recently. Hopefully something will please you too.

French website L’affiche moderne has lots of bright art which is particularly suitable for kids. I love this psychedelic print, Back to the old house, by UK based illustrator C86, aka Matt Lyon.

Tiger Island print by Craig Yamey
Craig Yamey can always be counted upon to create something unique and eye catching: I’ve already got his Mystical Magical Tiger Island Print in a frame.

Midnight Foxes By Dieter Braun
Midnight Foxes by Dieter Braun is a bestseller on East End Prints.

I don’t think you have to be a Bat for Lashes fan to love this print by Telegramme (though it would help).

Simone Lia-Wheel-of-Death
From Simone Lia’s infamous Chip and Bean series, this Wheel of Death print is a real bargain, from Tinta Prints.

I adore new prints by Finnish designer Sanna Annukka, which are a pure celebration of colour and pattern. Choose from Tonttu (meaning ELF) and Papatti (meaning FIRECRACKER).

Von is selling some beautiful fine art prints that focus on a fascination with the intricate structure, geometry, grace and beauty of birds.

I am always right by Andy Smith
This is a brilliant typographic print by Andy Smith at Soma Gallery – I wonder, does this fit your domestic set up? (we have a version of this up in our house… need I say more).

For something a bit more whimsical how about this Forest Chill Time print by Marina Muun.

Amelia’s Magazine | Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration launch party illustrations: meet Rachel de Ste. Croix

Susie Bubble needs no introduction and I absolutely adore Rachel’s rendition of this infamous fashion blogger. She’s been a great supporter of Amelia’s Magazine so it was an honour to see her at the launch party. You can read her write up here. Thanks Susie!

Rachel de Ste. Croix has developed a unique style that suits both childrens’ book illustration and fashion illustration a treat. Working from life she sketches a likeness of her subject and then transfers into into her computer through a painstaking process involving a light box and lots of black felt markers. From there she messes around in photoshop to achieve a beautiful handmade look that in fact makes the most of digital special effects – something which I talked about when I mentioned her in my Digital Arts interview. Here’s her fabulous ACOFI launch party output:

I love the fact that Neil Bennett of Digital Arts donated his ACOFI tote bag to his stepdaughter, prescription who has been using it to carry her school books, tadalafil much to the envy of her classmates. Check her out in this twitpic: coolest kid in town!

Tigz Rice is actually a friend of Rachel’s – I’ve now had the pleasure of working with more than a couple University of Westminster graduates, who are all super talented. Can’t think why. Maybe it’s because one of my bestest mates the wonderful illustrator Simone Lia teaches there. Or else it’s something in the water.

I cheekily asked Rachel to illustrate me. Well, she did such an amazing job with everyone else I really didn’t want to be left out. Here I am wearing my Joanna Cave earrings (new season darling) and Beautiful Soul cape-let made out of an upcycled kimono. You can buy similar Beautiful Soul pieces (they’re all different obviously) at the V&A shop.
