Alice Woods is in her final year studying BA Fine Art at Central St Martins. She is particularly interested in the implications of financial & economic power structures. This will be her third solo show, after 'Boiler Room' at The Büro Für Bestimmte Dinge, Institut Für Alles Möngliche, Berlin, March 2014 and 'The Laboratory of Pure Visual Research' at Boxpark Pop-Up Mall, London, October 2013. She is a recent recipient of the prestigious Mead Scholarship and is without a doubt, one to watch out for in the future. This exhibition serves to create an objective flow of investigations into the workings of the opaque and often bewildering financial sector.

Amelia’s Magazine | Galyna Moskvitina: The Heart of the Matter

Galyna Moskvitina’s works open up an unusual window to the soul, and entering the light-filled glass-walled space of Hay Hill Gallery for The Heart of the Matter is like stepping into a strange world existing parallel to ours. This is an eye-opening show that illuminates anxious feelings of being at odds with ourselves and our surroundings, offering a shimmering glimpse of wholeness, reminding us of something other that is already deeply known by our innermost selves.

As one of the most popular graphic artists in the Ukraine, Galyna Moskvitina was the first to illustrate Bulgakov's literary masterpiece The Master and Margarita – and perhaps his magical realism was an inspiration for these latest works. Her theory of Laternative Realism derives its name from ‘lantern’ and ‘nature’, and although the works seem abstract or ethereal there is a deeper meaning- that only by becoming present will we unlock our full potential. The concept of time is encoded within the ‘Sparkle Series’; behind the glittering jewels, snowflake prisms, cracked ice and smashed glass, each work is named according to the time of day that the viewer will experience full impact.

Stitches in Time is a community development charity based in Old Limehouse Town Hall, and this year hosts a second annual Winter Makers Market to support its charitable activities and provide a platform for local designers, makers, and community groups to offer their tantalising wares just in time for the upcoming season.

Stitches_in_Time_winter_market_craft
In addition Stitches in Time will host an Anonymous Art Sale, with the chance to snap up a potentially priceless piece of art by one of several famous artists, including Alison Wilding RA and Janette Kerr PRWA, or indeed just in at the time of going to press, local East End heroes Sir Ian McKellan and Danny Boyle! Proceeds of this go to support our FabricWorks programme – a valuable textile production social enterprise for London designers that works to overcome womens barriers into employment. For many of the women who have attended the classes and training this will be the first chance they've had to earn some money for themselves. Ceramicist Jessica Joslin will be offering her wares, as will Wild Sage & Co and many other talented designers and local makers.

THE REBEL BINGO REVOLUTION

SATURDAY 20 FEBRUARY 2010

A DEFIANT NIGHT OF DJs, DRINKING, DANCING AND HARDCORE REBEL BINGO

IN A NEW SECRET VENUE SOMEWHERE IN CENTRAL LONDON

We are not just a club night – we are a movement. We belong to something. Something we believe in. We don’t just play Rebel Bingo. We live it. It’s part of us. It’s inside us. It runs through our veins. We’ve created our own world, and we live in it together.

They want to stop us, but we won’t let them. They got too close. We had to disappear. We have left our old venues behind. Without a trace. We’re going deeper underground. It’s time to regroup. To spread the word further. To grow our numbers. It’s time for The Rebel Bingo Revolution.

This is Rebel Bingo like you’ve never played it before. It will be bigger, badder, rougher, and tougher. It will set off explosions in your brain. It will make your ears bleed. It will put your heart in your mouth. And you will like it. You’ll feel alive. If you think you’re ready, if you think you can handle it, then come join us. Most people won’t know it’s happening. But you will. And it will change your life forever. They can’t stop us. They won’t stop us. We’re in it together. Our time has come.

Rebel Bingo is dangerous and addictive. The authorities are after us so we have to keep these meetings secret. This meeting will be disguised as the Annual Summit of the Nations of the European Union. Please come dressed as a European – think Euro chic.

We believe access to Rebel Bingo should be free to all. You no longer have to pay to play Rebel Bingo once you are inside. It’s free.

Amelia’s Magazine | Martin Parr: A Birds Eye View of British Mealtimes

Category: Art

MartinParr_BirdsEye_4
One of the UK’s most celebrated photographers is unveiling a unique collection of images depicting the eating habits of Britain in collaboration with leading food brand Birds Eye. Martin Parr, who has been documenting real people doing everyday things for more than 22 years, was commissioned by Birds Eye to produce a unique snapshot of what makes up the typical, modern mealtime in Britain.

The exhibition entitled ‘A Birds Eye View’ features 30 brand new photographs depicting Parr’s four-month tour of the nation capturing every day mealtimes in regions including Kent, Cornwall, Norfolk, Yorkshire, Merseyside, London and Birmingham. The resulting photography displays a unique insight into a variety of meal occasions shared amongst friends and families. The moments captured include a group of young professionals sharing a midweek meal with a friend over Skype, a family eating a laid-back dinner in front of the TV and a household enjoying a traditional Indian curry.

The initiative by Birds Eye, which aims to celebrate mealtimes and the important role they play in people’s lives, follows the ‘Big Mealtime Audit’, a study exploring the way in which real people eat and interact with one another over food1. The findings found that one in five Brits (20 per cent) are eating as much as eleven times a day and spend on average just 25 minutes around the dinner table.

CAMPING STEAM PIC (at top)
Lyn Pollard washes greens in preparation for a stew outside her tent at the Port Eliot festival in Cornwall. Camping and preparing food outdoors are two long-standing British traditions. In this case Lyn is cooking for her daughter and her girlfriends on a camping trip to celebrate her daughter’s hen-do. The stew is based on her own special recipe, combining fresh local ingredients, slowly cooking whilst they enjoy the festival events at Port Eliot.

FAMILY EATING CURRY
Hansa Patel kneads traditional dough in her kitchen in Walsall, West Midlands. This dough is the base for many types of bread that she always serves with dinner. Her family likes to eat together, sharing classic homemade curries made with fresh ingredients and spices. Although served with a modern twist, Hansa likes to stay true to eastern cuisine traditions and recipes.

FAMILY TV DINNER
Pete Nicholls, his wife Rachel, and their children, Maya and Kai, enjoy their dinner of pies, mash and peas at home in Bristol. They are a family that likes to share their dinnertimes together, sometimes at the table, but also on the sofa watching TV. They enjoy great tasting food that is easy to prepare, going mainly for British classics, especially pies and mushy peas. Pete and his family explore different types of cuisine and always enjoy wholesome food together; mealtimes provide important moments for the family.

A BIRDS EYE VIEW: Martin Parr and Birds Eye collaboration
COUPLE TV DINNER
Sarah Dransfield serves a curry for her and her boyfriend at her home in Oxford. They are both working professionals and know how difficult it can be to make time to cook and share meals together. Sarah likes cooking good wholesome food, especially curries and stews, and makes them in advance so she can share a nice meal with her boyfriend during the week, without too much lengthy preparation. They like having dinner together, but are more relaxed and often share it while they watch TV and have a quick catch-up about their day.

Amelia’s Magazine | Peek: Arts University Bournemouth MA Illustration London Show 2014

Category: Art

Rambha-is-Avenged-Sharanya-Kunnath
Rambha is Avenged by Sharanya Kunnath.

Peek is an Illustration show put together by the 2014 MA Illustration students from Arts University Bournemouth. The show features the work of 7 different artists, with each artist hailing from a different place. Each student came to the course with different skill sets, which have evolved and changed over the year, in some cases quite radically. Peek is a means of celebrating and showcasing what has been achieved during the time in Bournemouth, both in terms of work produced and skills developed. The participating artists are Donna Jean Peters (America), Loren LeBlanc (America), Maria Naydenova (Russia), Marta Vives Poch (Spain), Sharanya Kunnath (India), Tori (Saudi Arabia) and Yvonne Lee (United Kingdom). The work displayed is as diverse as the places the artists come from, with paper cutting, 3D sculpting and printing, digital illustration, screenprinting, alongside other forms of traditional illustration such as ink and watercolour. The differences bring about an exciting juxtaposition between the various visual styles and mediums, highlighting the sheer range and scope of contemporary illustation.

Sharanya Kunnath's work centres around spirituality. Her MA project is an illustrated retelling of Mahishasura Mardini, the story of the Hindu Goddess Durga. The story centres around the battle between good and evil as a metaphor for the battle between the higher self and the unsettled mind, and the unfortunate end that comes to a man who underestimates women.

Untitled-Loren-LeBlanc
The premise of Loren LeBlanc's work is “Discover what illustration could be, not what it has been.” His experimental digital illustration project, Explorenart, is an impassioned investigation into the visual potential of digital sculpture as a medium. Fusing various state-of-the-art digital techniques including 3D modeling, compositing and databending, he has produced an innovative body of work; equal parts nostalgic and fresh, resonating vibrantly with the eyes of the digital age.

Bird-Cubes-Donna-Jean-Peters
Bird Cubes by Donna Jean Peters.

Donna Peters' work focuses on birds. She has become a Twitcher, or bird watcher. After researching and observing birds extensively, she decided to use them in a visual way creating a narrative consisting of British birds, ultimately recreating her observations of these feathered creatures through the medium of print.

City-Crocus-Yvonne-Lee
City Crocus by Yvonne Lee.

Yvonne Lee loves the surreal and creating mini narratives in her images for people to find. Drawing underpins all the work so she can produce it in different mediums and apply it to different products. She has recently been selected for an Honourable Mention in the international 3×3 Illustration Annual No.11, 2014 Student Show competition.

Praeter-Ipsum-Maria-Naydenova
Praeter Ipsum by Maria Naydenova.

Maria Naydenova is an illustrator and graphic designer. Her latest project is about parallel, surreal, psychedelic worlds which actually exist inside our brains, tangible only when we sleep. Dreams are our guides to these worlds; they are our ways to escape from reality. While subconsciously traveling, our true nature, our blocked thoughts and unrealized desires may come to light via strange creatures and ridiculous situations.

The-Axolotl-Marta-Vives-Poch
The Axolotl by Marta Vives Poch.

Marta Vives is an Illustrator, Fine Artist and Concept Art Designer. At Peek, she showcases Cave. The Art-Book, part of an on-going project, which will continue as a textless graphic novel. The psychology-heavy story centres around a girl trapped in a cave with no motivations or memories. An Axolotl is her only friend, whose lead she follows unquestioningly, until a bat flies in, bringing with it proof of a world outside the cave.

Study-Leopards-Blending-into-their-Surroundings-Tori
Leopards Blending into their Surroundings by Tori.

Tori is a freelance illustrator with a background in Graphic Design. The stories she tells are influenced by her life and daily encounters. At the moment, she is experimenting with papercuts and paper sculptures in an attempt to explore different methods in which she can illustrate the same image or sketch.
