Barbican Mikhail Karikis
Mikhail Karikis will be performing at More Soup and Tart.

As you will probably be aware I really enjoyed Pioneers of the Downtown Scene, New York 1970s, the exhibition that is currently running in the Barbican art gallery, so I'm very excited about some of the upcoming events that seek to marry performance ideas of the past with those that are happening now.

On Friday 15th April the Barbican Theatre will host More Soup and Tart, based on a legendary night that was held at the Kitchen in New York by artist Jean Dupuy in 1974. The audience will be invited to share a simple supper of leek and potato soup and apple tart before settling down to watch a series of 2 minute surprise performances from over 30 of the most exciting contemporary artists, choreographers, dancers, musicians and writers working today. These will include the Turner Prize-winning Martin Creed, pioneering visual and audio artist Christian Marclay, bad-girl performance art star Penny Arcade, investigatory composer and performer Simon Bookish, writer and theatre maker Tim Etchells and contemporary dance choreographer Frauke Requardt. Many of these performances have never been seen before.

It should be a highly unusual and entreating evening. Get your tickets here! They cost between £15-£25 and include food. Full details of the line up can be found on the Barbican website. And make sure you get clued up first by reading my review of Pioneers of the Downtown Scene, New York 1970s.
