So, you want to be hip but you don’t know where to start? Bought yourself some skinny jeans and a banging fringe but you’ve got no soundtrack to your hot new life? Well, help is at hand. For anyone wanting to get into the recent wave of new music but don’t know their Klaxons from their ketamine, Neon Nights is a pretty good place to start.

The first in a new series from DMC – the people behind the Back to Mine and Under the Influence collections – Neon Nights aims to bring together some of the best new music from the dance-rock scene. Neon Nights stands out from other compilations, featuring much-loved floor-fillers alongside unsigned or obscure bands. Among the 15 acts on the album you’ll find NME luvvies The Gossip and New Young Pony Club, as well as bands you might not have heard of, like Tiger Force or B.M.D (Bono Must Die).

The whole dance-rock scene can so often feel London-centric. Although many of the acts on the album hail from London, DMC have cast their net further afield to include Norwegian duo Data Rock and Toronto’s Crystal Castle, as well as some home grown talent from Leeds-based mouthful Shut Your Eyes And You’ll Burst Into Flames, as well as Glaswegian party boys Shitdisco.

Also included in this collection is chanteuse du jour Kate Nash with Caroline’s a Victim (Tapedeck Remix), an infectiously sulky slice of electro. The Gossip’s Standing In The Way Of Control is surely a staple addition to any party mix these days but it doesn’t seem to tire, particularly when wedged in between Middleman’s Mass Market Wigwams and Shut Your Eyes And You’ll Burst Into Flames Drop the Decade. The swaggering vocals of Blah Blah Blasé’s Infatuation and the stuttering beats of Hadouken!‘s Tuning In, give the whole mixtape an air of confidence.

Neon Nights looks like a promising start to a new series. It’s the perfect mix for those 3am ‘everyone back to mine’ moments, or for lending some much needed credibility to your teenage sisters ‘trash-my-suburban-home’ party.
