Now into its third month, The Wellcome Collection'sCharmed Life: The Solace of Objects’ is an exhibition that you should not miss. At the time of year when everyone is consumed by presents and festivity, what could be more fitting than a glimpse at some of the historical treasures often given as gifts, and kept as keepsakes?

Charmed Life is the product of artist Felicity Powell who has brought together a selection of amulets collected by the Edwardian folklorist Edward Lovett. Lovett was an avid collector of charms, who became intrigued by the legends and superstitions he learnt of as a child. He amassed a large and unique collection, over 1,400 pieces, and would go to great lengths, such as roaming the slums of Edwardian London, to seek new additions. His passion for collecting these tokens has helped to shed light on the social history and relationship with superstition at that time.

Powell has curated the installation, and is said to have been interested by the silent stories that these objects encapsulate. She has added a contemporary perspective to the exhibition, showing her series of intricate red and white wax works alongside the objects. There is also an insightful seven-minute film, Sleight of Hand, which shows Powell's delicate work on these wax pieces.

Charmed Life runs until February 26th, in conjunction with the second part of exhibition, 'Infinitas Gracias’, which explores Mexican miracle paintings. This display gives a unique glimpse into the lives of others through a rare and special medium – prepare to be just as intrigued and inspired as Edward Lovett himself.
