If you’re a culture vulture who’s feeling a bit underwhelmed by the cultural scene at the moment, we might just know of the perfect pick-up for you…

The impressive Wilton’s Music Hall (a venue worth checking out itself), will be showing The Love Suicides at Sonezaki, a moving piece of 16th century puppetry theatre, written by Japanese dramatist, Chikamatsu Monzaemon. This tragic love story unfolds over three scenes, staged over one day and a night, and is inspired by real life suicides that took place in Japan 1703.

The love story focuses on two characters, a young orphan merchant clerk named Tokubei and the courtesan, Ohatsu.

So it’s just a play about puppets then, I hear you say? Well, yes but there’s a bit more to it then that. Columbia University School of the Arts trained director/designer/performer Peter Case has adapted the play to present it with a modern twist, featuring live anime-inspired videos that blend with the stage performances, and music performed and curated by Peter Sheppard-Skaerved.

In keeping with the show’s Japanese theme, Wilton’s will be serving up freshly made sushi and saki in the bar before the show. So be there or be…well, just bored at home!
