At the first exhibition from PayneShurvell thirteen artists have worked in mixed-media to interpret the notion of mapping and place. The title of the exhibition, A Bright and Guilty Place, is taken from Orson Welles’ Lady of Shanghai in which the classic hall of mirrors climax sequence intertwines the virtual and the actual. Among the highlights are the blurred photographs of oversized monkey puzzle trees and cacti by Andrew Curtis (above) a deerskin painting by Lucy Wood, a curious reworking of a page from London’s A-Z by Dan Hays, delicate and colourful 3-D structures of Polish shop fronts by Anka Dabrowska, Derek Ogbourne’s intricate drawing of a map of England, Ian Whittlesea’s meticulous painting of all the addresses of Mark Rothko’s studios done in free hand and a floor installation maze in gold by Mary Yacoob (below).
