Included in the prints is a re-editioned silk screen of Magee's 'Thatcher' print, an image commissioned and published by The Daily Telegraph in 2003. The image accompanied a consumer item but, unbeknownst to the newspaper the series of dots spread around the image was actually braille, and a sharp reader decoded it as 'Thatcher Fucked Us'. When it became apparent that the artist had been doing this for several weeks, embedding messages countering the newspaper's right-wing philosophy, he was promptly sacked, unpaid for his last 6 images. For which he remains unpaid. The show's not on for long so don't miss it!

Amelia’s Magazine | Cornershop-by-the-Sea by Lucy Sparrow

Category: Art

Cornershop-by-the-Sea by Lucy Sparrow of Sew Your Soul is an exhibition truly worth making a fuzz about. Lucy dedicated seven months to recreating the entire contents of a traditional British cornershop out of felt, in total making 4,000 felt versions of familiar grocery items by hand, by herself – everything from Alphabites and Anusol and Coco Pops to Canesten have been recreated in fabric, in signed, limited editions.

Back in February, No Walls director James Woodward was an early supporter of Lucy's Kickstarter campaign to raise the initial funding for her first Cornershop, opened in a derelict shop in Bethnal Green in August. Together they then hatched a plan to open Cornershop-by-the-Sea in Brighton, with the show opening on Friday night. James says of the show “When I first saw what Lucy was doing I thought it was one of the greatest things I'd ever seen. We met and Lucy blew me away with what she had planned for the project. To see it from those early planning stages, to Lucy then pulling it all together and creating what we now have installed in the gallery has been quite amazing.”

It's rare for a show to have such a huge impact on the audience. We've had customers coming in wanting to buy scratch cards and lottery tickets and it takes a while for it to sink in that everything….. and I mean everything….. is made of felt. Cornershop-by-the-Sea makes you question your surroundings like nothing else I've seen, whilst at the same time leaving the audience with a huge smile on their faces…… it's pretty incredible.

The majority of the contents of Cornershop-by-the-Sea have already sold, with much of it going into a major private collection and after Cornershop-by-the-Sea, the installation will be moved to it's new permanent home. Cornershop-by-the-Sea represents your last chance to see what has to be one of the exhibitions of the year and purchase some of Lucy's Cornershop goodies.

Opening times: Tues-Sat 12-7, Sun 12-5

Amelia’s Magazine | Leyden Gallery: Platform for Emerging Arts #5

Category: Art

Leyden Gallery_Chloe and Jade
Johann Lester, Chloe and Jade

Although just over one year old, Leyden Gallery is fast building a distinct reputation for showing work by both new and established artists, with recent shows featuring Paula Rego (Oct/Nov 2013) Antony Micallef (Dec/Jan 2013/14) and Henry Moore (March/April 2014). Leyden Gallery has also had new work, which was commissioned by them for their inaugural exhibition Fabricate on show at the Tate Liverpool in April 2014 – Fournier Street by Sue Clayton. As a young gallery Leyden is gradually building a select group of represented artists – The Platform programme is one of our preferred approaches of seeking out new talent.

Leyden Gallery is delighted to present their fifth Platform for Emerging Arts exhibition. It is their largest Platform show to date, with an impressive range of artists working in mediums as diverse as wool, biro and oil. The Platform for Emerging Arts exhibitions are an important and distinctive element of Leyden Gallery’s on-going dedication to the discovery and development of emerging artists.

The Platform for Emerging Arts Exhibition show is part of Leyden Gallery’s ongoing programme of events. This group show features unrepresented artists once every quarter, allowing new and emerging artists to be introduced to the art world.

The call out is not limited to any specific medium and as such attracts applications from artists, who work in mediums that might otherwise struggle to be shown in a commercial art gallery context. This also provides a dynamic encounter for visitors to the gallery. Leyden Gallery is committed to offer this opportunity to a full range of emerging artists to exhibit work at a reputable London gallery, with full support from the curator and its directors.

Silvia Battista
The cultural references for Battista’s exquisitely detailed pencil drawings are early Italian renaissance painting. Her re-thinking of the work of artists such as Pontorno, Antonello da Messina and Masaccio, especially their understanding of the human figure is re-interpreted through a contemporary lens

Lydia Brockless
Much of Brockless’ sculptural work deals with paradoxes, these complex contradictions are materialised in the combinations of processes and forms.

Daniel Hosego
In his series called Melancholia, the artist Daniel Hosego explores the anxieties of living artists as they attempt to forge an original artistic vision. Each work comprises a triptych of images that have been painstakingly drawn across the pages of leather bound books; placing the work in a liminal state between object and image

Margherita Isola
In this Platform show Isola will show works which belong to her new project called Hamlet in Harar, which is presented here as a series of embroidered collages of mixed technique.

Johann Lester
Lester presents a body of work that has been produced by only using the marks of black biros, creating interplay between shadow and light.

Conor Flynn O’Donnell
Through his abstract painting practice O’Donnell engages the question of perfection, in what way it may exist, and how we may continually seek it.

Olexandra Solomka
The artist draws her influences from Tudor-age portraiture, as well as Eastern European iconography and folk art

Sintija Vikmane
Through her art, the Latvian Vikmane researches the convergence of history, beliefs and mythology from diverse cultures
