This Friday: PrettyFresh and the BFI Southbank present Sonic Cinema – an aural and visual feast. Every month there will be an exciting evening of explorations in music and moving image – encompassing feature films, documentaries and live performances that marry the two art forms together. The curators are Tayo Popoola, a renowned music producer and DJ, and Stuart Brown, Head of Events at BFI Southbank. Whatever the main feature, the night will always end with an after show party in the Benugo Bar & Kitchen.

The very first Sonic Cinema kicks off this Friday 7th October when festival impresario and Radio 1 late-night legend Rob da Bank will be rescoring Ernest B Shoedsack’s classic King Kong with music from musicians including Sigur Ros, Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Lee Scratch Perry, Black Sabbath, Portishead, Harry Connick Junior, Bon Iver and Laurie Anderson. I am a big fan of new scores for old movies, as experienced at Latitude and more recently in Montreal at the Fantasia Film Festival.

Rob will play live in National Film Theatre as the film plays out. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Rob conducted by co-curator Tayo Popoola, who will talk through some of Rob’s musical choices and inspirations. The two of them will then de-camp to the Benugo Bar for the after party, dancing and discussion.

Next up: on Friday 4th November PrettyFresh and BFI Southbank will host the screening of cult British Indie film Anyone Can Play Guitar with host Adam Buxton and appearances from Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien and Colin Greenwood – more details on this and other Sonic Cinema events coming soon.

Tickets for this event are just £10 from the BFI website. Read an interview with Rob Da Bank about the Sonic Cinema event here.
