From mid July to mid August the Vegas Gallery in Shoreditch will be hosting the first solo show of British artist Gemma Nelson. Gemma Nelson graduated from the Slade School Of Fine Art in 2007 and was immediately hyped up as one of the most promising graduates of her year – she was shortlisted for Saatchi Gallery’s Four New Sensations and nominated as a finalist for the Nationwide Mercury Art Prize.
Her work will especially appeal to illustrators – she is highly obsessive about construction, weaving delicate cell like tapestries from brightly coloured Indian inks, thread, hair and shimmering sequins. The vivid patterns incorporate hidden mythological creatures that inhabit strange psychedelic landscapes in response to themes of female sexuality, fairy tales and notions of digital interconnectivity.

For the Hello Carousel exhibition Gemma Nelson has taken as inspiration crumbling roller coasters, abandoned helter skelters and carousels. Her signature extrovert patterns sprawl organically across clean white backdrops, from which the distorted structures rise, cells of colour bubbling and multiplying, only to keel over and collapse. The paintings appear to grow and recede as they tumble across the gallery walls.
