I expect that many people out there, like me, are feeling powerless to do anything to help the dire situation unfolding in Japan. What the Japanese undoubtedly need more than anything right now is fast international disaster relief, which for whatever reason just isn't getting through yet. But rather than sit around worrying about what to do, a lot of grassroots activities have sprung up to raise money that will go towards disaster relief when it finally does happen.
One wonderful idea has been mobilised extremely quickly, and this Friday 18th March you can show solidarity and help raise money by attending Cakes for Japan: Edible delights to raise funds for Japan. As a result of the incredible networks on twitter Miss Cakehead has enlisted the help of cake makers across the UK, who have volunteered in their droves to contribute baked goods for Miss Cakehead's Pop-Up Shop at Maiden on Shoreditch High Street. All the cakes are Japan inspired and will be sold on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th of March.
Contributors include:
Molly Bakes: amazing sushi cake pops
Charmaine Mok: Black Sesame macaroons
Leshi Loves Cake: green tea cupcakes
Nevie Pie: cherry blossom inspired cakes
And there will even be whoopie pies from Accidentally Vegan (my fave). In fact the list of offerings just keeps on growing as more and more bakers volunteer their help. Cakes for Japan promises to be a really heartwarming way to express our love for all things Japanese together with a deep seated desire to help make things better for the people out there who are suffering.
The idea has been so popular that another pop-up cake shop will take place in Edinburgh, with others mooted for Leeds, Manchester and also in Germany.
More information on the Cakes for Japan website. Maybe you will be inspired to hold your own fund-raising bake off too?
