Pick Me Up is back for a second time! Can it really be a whole year since the first one was held at Somerset House? The answer is not quite, because this time around it's more than a month earlier. You can read my review of last year's inspiring event here.
This years artist in residence will be Anthony Burrill, hosting an open studio where visitors can watch him at work. I know from speaking to last year's resident Rob Ryan that to transplant an entire studio is a massive feat – so don't miss this brilliant opportunity to watch a graphic designer at the top of his game as he goes about his work.
Despite none of my nominated Amelia's Magazine illustrators being picked for the Pick Me Up showcase of the hottest and most exciting graphic artists and illustrators to town (PAH) I will be very excited to see what Pick Me Up does choose to include this year. Amongst the artists who were picked as the best international up and coming talent you can expect to see are the prints of Wojciech Kolacz, Kate Moross, Gwenola Carrere, Tom Gauld and Sarah Arnett. Collectives involved include It's Nice That, Nobrow, Nous Vous, Print Club London and Jaguar Shoes, who is hosting a camping themed installation.
There are lots of events on throughout the running time of the exhibition, and here are some of the best:
Thursdays 17th and 24th March: 6-9pm
Live drawing to music from illustrators including previous Amelia's Magazine contributors Luke Best and Jim Stoten.
Friday 18th March: 2-7pm
A zineswap library where you can browse the best new zines around.
Tuesday 22nd March: 11am-6pm
Mokita – a platform for the discussion and dissemination of illustration featuring several illustration tutors from several colleges that I have lectured at, Luke Best and one of my bessie mates, the fabulous illustrator Simone Lia. I had hoped to take part in this too so I'll keep you updated…
Note: the symposium costs a hefty £70 to attend. You can book here.
Thursday 24th March: 6.45pm-7.45pm
Meet Anthony Burrill, who will be talking about his work as an illustrator, artist and video director.
Again this costs a hefty £12, or £8 with concessions.
Tickets to the Pick Me Up exhibition cost £7 or £5 concessions, an absolute bargain price for such a wide range of graphic and illustrative talent… and even if Amelia's Magazine isn't in attendance I'll be blogging my review as soon as possible so watch this space.
UPDATE. Here is my review! Go read!
