David LaChapelle's 'American Jesus: Hold me, carry me boldly', illustrated by Lisa Stannard.
David LaChapelle is famous for producing some of the most memorable images in popular culture. Famed for his kinky, over-the-top, glitzy style, he has photographed everyone from Marilyn Manson to Isabella Blow in various states of undress and sexual innuendo for Vogue, Rolling Stone, i-D, Vanity Fair and Andy Warhol’s legendary Interview magazine.
In his latest work, controversially entitled 'Rape of Africa', showing at Robilant and Voena, LaChapelle turns his hand to politics, fusing his love of Italian Renaissance art with his glossy signature style. In the show’s centre-piece to which the exhibition lends its name, LaChapelle uses bright and decadent fantasy imagery to draw us into a dark and sinister reality, ultimately presenting to us in dramatic fashion the tragedy of Western consumerism on the African continent.
