Amelia’s Magazine | Mojo Cosmetics Titan Lipstick for blood red Valentines Lips

Mojo Cosmetics-Titan-lipstick-valentine

I was sent this amazing lipstick awhile ago, and only rediscovered it lurking at the bottom of a box when I was *trying* to have a tidy up. (don’t ask me how that went okay) When I turfed it out I have to admit that I was thoroughly confused by what I found. Buried in a large box there was a case that looked more like a bullet than a lipstick holder. Inside, nowt, nada, empty… but a further rootle around unearthed a separate lipstick and a long string of metal beads or ’silver pearls’.

Mojo Cosmetics-Titan-lipstick

Further investigation (the press release long since lost) revealed that these components were destined to be united, the ruby red lipstick slotting neatly into the casing, and the beads strung through the rung to create a necklace effect, though the lipstick can also be attached to your keyring or purse. The bullet container can be refilled with several lush shades of lipstick, or a concealer.

Now normally I would think something like this a completely unnecessary addition to my life (if highly covetable), but there’s something almost, dare I say it, sensible, about making a lipstick case that can be refilled. Or at least it would make sense if I never bought another lipstick in my entire life. The casing is designed to offer maximum protection, promising never to come apart in the bottom of your bag (oh yes, I know that one alright) and protecting the lipstick nestled within from floods, storms and earthquakes. Okay, I made that bit up, but the ‘aerospace grade alloy’ casing does claim to stop the lipstick from melting, which would otherwise surely be a danger nestled so close to one’s warm bosom. I must confess that I haven’t tried the Titan out yet cos it just looks so pretty all shiny and new, but I shall report back once I’ve plucked up the courage to once again rock that bright red lip vibe that I loved so much as a teenager.

Mojo Cosmetics-Titan-lipstick-necklace

When I revisited the Mojo Cosmetics website today I also discovered that they have recently added a few more items to what was an incredibly slim range. Of one lipstick. They now offer some stackable metal tins containing creamy eye powders and luxury nail varnish to match the lipstick range and which claims to make your nails stronger. I like the sound of that – my nails are incredibly weak and much as I like to wear nail varnish, if I use a cheap variety it will inevitably wreak havoc. (My new year’s resolution last year was to make more effort to wear some of the lovely nail varnishes I’ve collected over the years, but I had to give up after a month or so when my nails started to yellow and drop off. Like an old witch. Well maybe not that bad, but nearly.)

If you can get past the overeager use of flash on the Mojo Cosmetics website, you can enjoy the bold military styled ad campaign – an inspired move in this era of austerity chic. The lipstick is already a favourite of American bloggers but it is possible to pick up one in the UK and I’d say that a blood red Titan lipstick might make the ideal imaginative Valentine’s present. I’m sure quite a few girls would agree.

Amelia’s Magazine | Valentines oh Valentines…

Lili Vanili Valentines Cake

It’s February. Which means, sale you know, stuff Valentines day. I have a tourettes-like response to it’s mere mention. A gag reflex and an overwhelming desire to shout obscenities at strangers.

I don’t know why this is. Perhaps it has its roots in the hell that was secondary school love angst. (Will I get a card?.. Shall I send a card… Will somebody post dog poo through my letter box?.. OMG I GOT A CARD *phones all friends*… Oh. Its from my Dad…I HATE MY DAD….*sits on inflatable chair and cries into Leonardo DiCaprio poster*)

This aversion to all things Valentines is odd for me because at any other time of year I’ll use any excuse to celebrate. Passed an exam? Brunch! Had a shit week? Fry up! St whatsists day? Party! Commiseratory dinners, cialis 40mg congratulatory afternoon tea’s, pity parties and apologetic lunches; whatever the occasion (or lack thereof) I’m there with balloons. But for some reason, Valentines grates on me.

The traditional options are not great. If you’re single; you could get hammered alone or with other single friends. Or watch a Richard Curtis film whilst curled up in the fetal position in flannel pyjamas. Or if you are in a relationship; try and book a table in a restaurant only to find that they are ALL booked and/or extortionately expensive. Then spend the evening looking around at the other couples who are sat within spitting distance whilst the staff incessantly sell you expensive wine and champagne with James Blunt warbling away at you in the background.

Sound good? Thought not. (I sound like a love Scrooge, I definitely have issues)

I banned my mister from engaging in any form of commercial Valentines celebration right at the start of our relationship, and we’ve ended up with a fish and chips dinner tradition instead, which I am actually quite fond of.

But if you MUST release your inner schmaltz, here are some alternatives to cheap chocolates and teddybears. Don’t get me started on teddybears.

Firstly, if you are in a relationship, probably best not too buy a card from the supermarket. Or the corner shop down the road. Or the petrol station. It takes very little effort to make something and its much more thoughtful. How about writing a letter? It doesn’t have to be a love letter, and its nicer than a brief scrawl in a card. Or what about a stick man comic strip or a flip book? We can all draw stick men. See? No excuse.

If you hate the idea of making something yourself, there are a whole host of talented illustrators and makers out there who will happily fulfill all of your home spun looking Valentines needs. Check out some ideas in Amelia’s article over here.

I discovered via Twitter that Abby Illustrator and her boy are having a living room picnic, which sounds lovely to me and much nicer than the aforementioned Blunt-warbling-restaurant-nightmare.

If you are planning on buying flowers for a loved one (it could be a friend, your lover, your mum..) then … think again. Sorry for the eco rant but growing and transporting flowers uses a huge amount of carbon, especially if they are from overseas. If you must indulge in some floristry delights then look up British grown flowers.

Or, heres a wee crafty idea; give someone a pack of wildflower seeds. Decant into an attractive envelope, sew (or glue) on to a piece of card and illustrate with an appropriately cheesy message. (as this grows it’ll be a symbol of my love. PUKE. My love is like this red red rose. VOM. etc etc)

And for a healthy alternative/addition to a box of chocolates, pretty up a punnet of red fruit and decorate with little flags.

Cook a pink dinner. Beetroot soup to start. Rare steak with a tomato salsa dressing. Kir Royals or Rose wine. Red velvet cake for pudding, or pink macarons or strawberry angel delight… This would be lovely for one, two or twenty two.

Make cookies. Just for the hell of it. Give to colleagues, friends, family members. Or, of course, your loved one. Dust with icing sugar for a chic minimalist finish or get into an e- number frenzy with coloured icing. Home made and cheap.

Go to see Grayson Perry talk about kinky sex. Hold on to your hats.

Send a You’re rad/I like you/love note to your friends and family. Last year I sent mini valentines cards to the female members of my family just to tell them that I think they are rad, and the reasons why.

Visit Love from Darkroom, an exhibition raising money for the brilliant charity Kids Company. All of the art pieces are under £150 and it runs till 14th February. Read Amelia’s full listing here.

Host a horror night. My mister and I are planning on spending the Saturday before Valentines working through some early horror films (Nosferatu, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Birds, Night of the Living Dead…) Nothing like a bit of flesh eating Zombie action to get you in that Valentines mood.

Join the Craftivist Collective in hijacking Valentines day and show some love for your global neighbour. Write letters to strangers and make a Tatty Devine key ring then leave them for strangers to pick up. (see separate listing here)

Keyring

Why not send your loved one an anatomically correct bleeding heart cake by Lilli Vanilli; the creator of the fabulous ACOFI launch party masterpiece? They are made from red velvet sponge, cream cheese frosting and blackcurrant & cherry ‘blood’. I love them and they are a steal at £7.

Image via Lili Vanilli’s blog

Watch Fuck. Not the real thing, gracious no, unless that’s your thing. I’m talking about the documentary which features interviews with the world’s best swearers including Billy Connolly and Ice-T. Hurrah for obscenities!

Visit the Valentines exhibition at the wonderful Museum of Brands, Packaging and Advertising. This is one of my favourite London museums and this exhibition is all about the culture and history of valentines cards.

Take your loved one on a ‘haunted london’ ghost tour instead, and see the grizzlier side of Londons history…

Go on a night safari with the Natural History museum: You can choose either one of 2 experiences, depending on whether you think Valentine Day is a pleasure or a pain. Both look at the different aspects of Love in the Natural World.

See? Valentines doesn’t have to be a pile of sick. There’s lots of fun stuff to do whether you are in a relationship or not. Or there’s always the pyjama option too…

And so, even I, say to you Happy Valentines day!

Amelia’s Magazine | Valentines Open Brief: Submissions Part 1

Chantelle Bell
I was thrilled to receive over 40 submissions for my Valentines Open Brief, nine of which were chosen by East End Prints to appear in their True Romance exhibition, open now (full listing here). Here is my first round up of the other submissions with text by the artists and links to their websites – I’m sure you will agree there are some stunning images here.

Chantelle Bell (above)
I heard this quote in a Twilight film and found it really sweet, no matter how cheesy it is. I think that the time we spend with our loved ones isn’t what is important, however what happens during this time is. We don’t have limitless lifespans, unlike some film characters, so we can only offer what we have, with the promise that if we had more, we would spend it with the one we love. I created this paper cut illustration with bright colours to keep it cheerful and drew the text with a fine liner before gluing it all down. The love hearts continue off the page to signify the infinite aspect of love. However childish or naive it may seem to believe love can last, there are the hopeful few who do, and these are the few who keep the hope alive.

owlpussycat print
Eugenia Tsimiklis
The Owl and the Pussycat: The poem is about an unlikely union between owl and pussy cat. It speaks of their complete devotion to one another and willingness to sail away together towards adventures unknown. The poem suggests the couple sacrifice their most worldly possessions to escape together and concludes as they dance by the light of the moon hand in hand. It’s a nursery rhyme with romantic sentiment, and I wanted the illustration to reflect this with a stark yet organic feel. I wanted the illustration to have a fluid quality with its linear linework and limited palette.

PRETTY WOMAN-Faye West
Faye West
I love the concept of alternative film posters. And a lot of my illustrative influences come from cult film poster artists such as Robert McGinnis. I wanted to depict romance via the classic film Pretty Woman (1990) and it’s more modern use of romantic language. We like our romances with a certain edge these days, and this is a film that is close to the hearts of many generations, not only because it stands the test of time, but also because it’s such a colourful representation of it’s era. I think this iconic film deserves referencing in fashion and art for future generations to come. And for me, is the ultimate romantic film.

for walls
For Walls
A print inspired by the Valentine’s Day tradition of giving flowers. I like to capture little domestic scenes in my prints, and these flowers are somehow in keeping with this. The print is designed to be celebratory and noisy, so I’ve included some process colours (and clashing colours) to really make it pop! The print is designed in Illustrator, and is made by creating lots of individual shapes to build up the image, then overlaying the outlines so the structure is visible. I like to show off the digital elements and background of a composition in a lot of my work. I’ve also played with transparency to add a bit of extra depth.

Here at hello DODO we love creating simple graphic tricks that make people smile. We are a husband and wife team and are self-taught screen printers based in Brighton, designing and printing from our home studio. Over the years we’ve been hugely influenced by design legends such as Alan Fletcher & Milton Glaser and their witty eye for creating fun, timeless designs. This particular design was actually born when we sent Milton Glaser himself a little Christmas greeting with our own adaptation of his timeless ‘I heart NY’ design including this little bearded guy. Milton’s response is still one of our most treasured things and continues to encourage and inspire us:
Thank you for your greeting, it is by far the best and cleverest adaptation of my time-worn logo and a Merry Christmas to you as well. Milton

This is a re-working of a collage piece I did a few years ago, that’s where the text is from. I have hand rendered the found text in this version, but evoke the cut and paste aesthetic by keeping it in irregular boxes. The imagery is inspired by classic romance movies like those ones with Fred Astaire, Katherine Hepburn, suits, dresses, dancing dancing dancing and oh so meaningful glances. I painted everything first and just suggested some tones before adding the outline at the end, I like to do this with watercolour and ink as it keeps a sense of fluidity and motion in the work and it doesn’t get too exact or cartoony. The serendipity which led to the original wording was perfect, and I like how it adds a second reading to the picture as the cynical aside both laughs at the romance of the image and to some extent grounds it, as these onomatopoeic breathy words remind us of the physicality of love – heart racing, palms sweating etc. and certainly of dancing too.

I’ve always loved this film – How to Steal a Million. Since I was a child I always thought this is the best way to start a relationship. Hah, of course I do not think so now. But I think Audrey Hepburn and Peter O’Toole were such a great and beautiful couple. The ARE such a great and beautiful couple even after almost 50 years later. And when I feel myself sad in some cold winter evening I adore to watch this film seating in my chair with a cup of my Earl Grey.

My illustration, entitled ‘I smelt you from across the park’ is about True Love. Although the scene centres around two dogs who have found romance in a busy park, it also shows love in other forms. A man reads his favourite newspaper, a group of friends share a picnic, and a dog chases deer despite the wishes of his owner (Fentooooonnn!). Rather than planning an image before I start, I paint as ideas come into my head, which I hope makes the illustration feel more alive. My inspiration for this drawing came from a walk in St James’s Park in London last weekend, where I noticed that everyone seemed to be having a really, really good time. I don’t think love is limited to the feeling felt between two people, and this is what I hope to show in this illustration.

Netina

When I started thinking of a Valentine’s day illustration I immediately decided to base it around a heart image. But I didn’t want this heart to be a conventional one. Then for no particular reason I remembered how I had noticed in the past that two question marks facing each other look very much like a heart. That was it! That would be my idea for the Valentine’s illustration. Everyone’s familiar with the feeling of wondering whether a person you love/like/fancy has some feelings for you too. Well a question mark can easily be a symbol of that feeling. The characters in the illustration aren’t human for two reasons. Mainly because animal characters are sometimes more fun and secondly as a small tribute to one my most favourite romantic movie scenes: the candlelight dinner from Disney’s Lady and the Tramp. When it comes to the technical details now the illustration has been hand drawn with water colours and scanned. Hope you like the result.

This piece was inspired by a love of Eastern European Folk Art- it’s colours, patterns and forms. My process is rooted in the tactile, my love of drawing and painting.

More recently my work is based upon a love of nature, and constant observational drawing, an environment in which I can explore narrative and new techniques in my artistic practices. I use both traditional drawing skills and a digital environment to create my final pieces. This piece was inspired by my early teenage obsession with the 1960′s, and the music, illustrations and clothes from that era. Particularly, The Beatles and The Yellow Submarine, my favourite film at the time

My work is a combination of pencil drawing / water colour / and digital art.
The inspiration behind my work, is how two hearts find each other and fall in love in a seemingly random way. With so many hearts around us – i think its amazing that somehow we manage to seek out the one thats right for us.

This quote is based on a line from Baz Lurhman’s film version of ‘The Great Gatsby’, spoken by Daisy to Jay Gatsby “I wish I’d done everything on earth with you”.  It was apparently a line taken from a letter that Zelda Fitzgerald had written to her husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald (the books’ author). It’s so romantic but has an element of sadness in the context of the story so I altered it to the slightly more hopeful phrase “Lets do everything on earth together”.  I wanted to create a simple image to encapsulate the idea of the scope and expanse of love, and the idea of hope and adventure.
My work always begins in a sketchbook. In this case the typography is hand painted and digitally coloured and the imagery began as a cut paper collage, which I have manipulated and layered digitally with different textures. I love reading classic fiction, and I am inspired by bold simple shapes and patterns. happy colours and the fun and excitement in the world all around me.

More to come in Part 2 tomorrow!

Always Together, Gold Enamel Pendant

The new enamel pendants from Bonbi Forest feature gorgeous illustrated designs set in dainty gold and silver, and can be personalised with extra charms, making them the perfect gift for Valentines or just that someone special. I last spoke with designer Lee May Foster-Wilson in 2011, and it’s always a pleasure to catch up with her.

Bonbi Forest - Lee - Working
Since we last caught up with you in 2011 you have become a mother, how has this changed your business and inspiration?

I had my daughter in January 2012 (she’s just turned 2, time really has flown!) and weirdly since having her I have had the best two years of business yet. I was back to sending orders about a week after having her, she would come with me to the studio for short spells and would sleep while I packed orders and made things. I worked out I could get 10 scarves printed during one of her average length naps so for a long time I worked like that.

As she got older my husband and I have been sharing her care between us (he works from home which makes life a lot easier in that respect!) and while the actual length of time I have to work is a lot less than it used to be, there is nothing like having that time limit to focus the mind and work solely on the task in hand. There is no time for procrastination any more! It actually works really well, when I have my time with her I can focus on her, and when I have time to work, I only work and I get to enjoy doing both of those things every day.

Having less time in the day also pushed me to take the leap into getting some help with the jewellery, which I did about a year ago. 2013 was the busiest Christmas season ever and after nearly three months of flat out afternoons and working late into the night with a baby to look after, I was exhausted and realised that I really did now need to get someone in to help take on some of the making. I enlisted the help of my sister in law and good friend, Mo who is very deft with her hands and she now works for me on a freelance basis. It’s brilliant, I give her a big bag of components at the beginning of the week and she gives it back to me at the end of the week full of lovely pieces of jewellery!

I still make a fair bit of jewellery myself and still do all of the screen printing but to date she’s made a couple of thousand pieces which has free’d up so much extra time for me to put into designing and organising. The business has never been so well planned with ideas being worked on so far in advance! It’s made me realise I should have taken the step to do that so much sooner…

My inspiration has definitely changed since becoming a mother. I have realised that since 2012 when I first found out I was expecting, that my work has gradually leaned more towards an interest in relationships, connection, ambition and looking forward. I am still very influenced by the natural world and use that kind of imagery to describe these new themes but I think becoming a parent gives you an entirely new perspective on things. It happens all of a sudden too (for me it did anyway) one day you are going along as normal and waiting for this new person to arrive and then the next they are here and your perception of love, your priorities and your life has changed forever.

I think my most recent collections reflect these changes in inspiration the most. last Autumn’s Hand pieces were to do with connecting with other people, being close to others and about personal community. The latest jewellery designs focus on close relationships and love between best friends, siblings and parents as well as romantic love.

Looking back as well, the pieces I made around the time I found out I was pregnant were concerned with growing (the From Small Seeds Locket), looking to the future (Spread Your Wings), and about love between mothers and their children (Always Over the Mountain). All of which have been best sellers so those themes are clearly something a lot of people can relate to.

You have just launched a new collection of enamel pendants, how did these come about?

With my wearables I am constantly striving for ways in which to put across the Bonbi Forest vibe and incorporate my own artwork and imagery. The lockets and the process used to make them has been a big success as far as this goes but I wanted to work more with different shapes and not just necessarily lockets. I have used a couple of different methods such as laser cutting and etching as well but the enamel idea has been bubbling away for a couple of years now.

I had such a strong idea of how I wanted these to look that enamel was the only way forward for these ones and after a lot of research, questions about the process, working out costing and finally finding a manufacturer that could make it happen they are here and I am so pleased with them! I loved designing these and seeing them come to life so long after the initial ideas were submitted has been really exciting…there will definitely be more enamel Bonbi things!

How would you suggest these new charms are worn and who do you think they might appeal to?

They are designed to be given as gifts of affection or worn as a token of your love for someone else. The little stamped letter charms add a touch of the personal so you can wear one with the initials of you and your most favourite, or give one as a gift to a mother with her children’s initials. They can be worn on their own too without the personalised charms to add a romantic hint to an outfit, or can be given as an anonymous gift from a guy to a gal on Valentines perhaps?

Each design comes in gold or silver and there’s a choice of a short or longer chain depending on your style…

In the past you have spoken about going into homeware and stationery – is this still a wish and if so what ideas do you have?

As I mentioned earlier, in the last couple of years I have become much better organised with the business and plan ahead a lot more now. I used to be much more carefree about when and what I designed but I have come to realise that you simply can’t do everything! I have a small range of tea towels that incorporate my scarf and jumper print designs and have a range of cards with my artwork on them but aside from that I no longer have plans to add further homeware or stationery ranges to the permanent collection.

Having said that limited edition pieces aren’t out of the question and I do have a collaboration for some homeware based items in discussion, so watch this space!

How is life in Cornwall? Can you recommend any wonderful lesser known areas for those readers lucky enough to visit that part of the world?

I LOVE living here! I live in a very rural area in a small community which I know wouldn’t be for everyone but for me it’s perfect. I do miss the cultural hubbub of the city from time to time but when I did live there I craved to be back in the countryside again so I came to realise that it is where my heart belonged. The internet makes the world a much smaller place and it is easy to stay connected these days (as much as having a toddler around will allow anyway!) and I take so much inspiration from being in the countryside that I feel it is important to be within it.

I am lucky enough to live in a little cottage on The Roseland which is a beautiful rural area on the south coast. I can highly recommend the beaches here (Carne and Porthcurnick are large and sandy when the tide is out, Portholland is good for rock pooling and for off the beaten track Kiberick is beautiful) and the smattering of pubs around in the villages offer a good slice of local life…there are a few working fishing harbours here too which are very pretty and worth a visit for something a little different. If you do make it to this area the coastal path is a breathtaking must too.

The Hidden Hut just off Porthcurnick beach is a gem for lunch and I always take visiting friends there in the summer (dress for the weather though, it’s all alfresco) and if you can get tickets to one of their feast nights you are in for a treat but they sell out in minutes!

I’ll stop now before I start to sound too much like the tourist board…

What else have you got planned for Bonbi Forest in 2015?

I have a long list of ideas to get working on and am currently involved in a new collection of jewellery and screen print designs that focus on ambition and dreams which I hope to launch at some point in February. The Bonbi Forest stockist list is steadily growing and I hope to get the range stocked in a few more shops this year as well as adding to and expanding the range over the year…

Aside from that I will be fitting in a bit of painting to have some more original artwork on offer and I’d like to do some more limited edition runs of screen prints like the Trereife Horses pieces that I made last summer…before I know it I know we’ll be working on Christmas pieces and I like to use the first half of the year to solidify ideas and timescales so there’s always something good to be working with!
