Amelia’s Magazine | London Fashion Week S/S 2011 Catwalk Review: Simon Ekrelius

After a terrible morning trying to fix my sodding bike, giving up, taking it to Evans Cycles, regretting that because the employee was an arse and then persuading him to eventually fix it, I cycled precariously to Victoria House with one brake and the other attached with Blu-Tack to catch Simon Ekrelius‘ show. I didn’t know anything of Ekrelius until today but whenever I mentioned his name people would practically fall at my feet (perhaps wishing they were falling at his).

Well, it turns out the hype my small circle of friends had built was deserved. I decided to stand with the macho photographers in the pit this time to experiment with a different angle for images. If only I had known the following three facts.

1. Photographers are nasty
2. I was standing in the front of the world’s loudest speaker
3. Simon Ekrelius had chosen shot gun noises to launch his show.

Imagine my surprise when the crowd were shushed, the lights fell low, and the BANG BANG BANG started up behind me. Jesus Christ. My entire self moved three feet across the room, at which point the whole of the photographer’s pit descended into cackles of laughter. And who can blame them? I was as red as a peach.

As the first model strutted down the catwalk, I desperately tried to pull myself together, which didn’t take too long as the attention was quickly diverted to what the models had on offer. These girls were not shy. They had clearly been directed to march to the front in the normal fashion, but then as they made their way back, to walk in a zig-zag pattern and stop periodically to pose. And pose they did, rather fabulously. It was HILARIOUS, particularly when we got to the nudity part of the show and front rowers were subjected to bare arses in their face…

I should probably say something about the fashion by now. Well, it was grand. Pretty much everything was translucent or transparent in some way, hence the abundance of gratuitous arse and tit. There were some fabulous monochrome numbers inspired by graphic art, which were split directly down the middle or by the use of geometric shapes – this worked best on all-in-one catsuit numbers, which were teamed with huge brimmed hats that had the front row bloggers throwing their cameras in the air in unison.

The use of such shiny materials with oodles of aesthetic appeal made a sometimes basic collection of cropped separates and halter-neck playsuits into a more futuristic one. Exaggarated shoulders and high waistlines were delivered with masculine tailoring, creating a dominative silhouette. Accessorised with blue-rinse hair piled on top of heads, huge sunglasses and coral lips, the styling was superb.

The show continued with more dramatic silhouettes, lots more monochrome (which worked SO well, I have to say) and then it got a little sillier with these transparent numbers I was speaking of. I mean, they were actually amazing in terms of conception and craftsmanship, but nobody’s going to leave the house like that, are they? That would be arrestable, surely? I bet they’d look great with a modest vest or something underneath. I’d imagine. But all that flesh was a little too much for me (thank god I hadn’t taken my allocated seat on the front row, or I might have ended up with an arse in my face like so many onlookers.)

All in all, though, a fab outing for Mr Ekrelius. Less tit next time, please. Right, next up, Charlie le Mindu and those vaginas. Good heavens.

There was a real buzz before the Krystof Strozyna show and this designer more than lived up to expectations on the day. At first glance his collection looked very simple but it fast became apparent that attention to detail was key to this polished show. Models with blunt cut bobs and heavy brows really turned heads whilst sharp cut outs and bold contrasting colours on top of a cool neutral palette really caught the eye. It was a fine balancing act but the oversized pockets and structured collars were an interesting addition that didn’t distract from the overall simplicity. The recurring graphic lip shape –  a fresh yet abstract take on pop art – was a fun inclusion among what felt like a very grown up aesthetic. The final applause was electric as Krystof Strozyna had performed magic by making the simple camisole and shift covetable and a mid-calf cut desirable. This was a collection of fresh and minimal pieces that I would definitely like to wear come spring.

Amelia’s Magazine | Graduate Fashion Week 2012 Gala Awards Ceremony: Part One

Twelve hundred students descend on Earls Court Two for Graduate Fashion Week every year. About a quarter of them get the opportunity to showcase their collections during one of the 16 fashion shows that are held over four days. In a dramatic climax – the Gala Awards show – 10 students are selected to present their work for a second time in the hope of receiving the coveted Gold Award.

So, like the fashion industry itself, chances of making it are pretty slim. 10 incredible collections graced the catwalk in the finale and I honestly couldn’t pick a winner – celebrity judges like Matthew Williamson and Julien Macdonald commented on the incredible standard exhibited of not only those who had been selected as a Gold Award nominee, but every college.

Amelia’s Magazine | People Speak – Who Wants to Be?

The People Speak is an arts and technology collective with a very good idea; it is inviting the world to decide its own fate in the most important game show on the planet and why not take part?!
To tie in with the visit of world leaders to Copenhagen, order on Friday 18th December Who Wants to Be…? will see a live audience of 400 in the Danish capital and thousands of people around the world invest €5 each and discuss and vote on how to spend the budget they have created in the interests of saving the planet. The game show gives people a new way of making global decisions and financing them with real money, ask allowing the participants to have a very real influence on the environmental issues world leaders are considering at the United Nations Climate Change conference.

The art world is currently experiencing awakening of a sort and The People Speak fit into this new trend of art and ecology. Still, they are one of a kind; a London-based collective founded in 2004 by Mikey Weinkove and Saul Albert, with an ever-expanding group of highly talented specialists. They are committed to developing tools and technologies for participatory art and media, bringing people together for spontaneous conversation and creative exchange. They were recently featured in US Now, a film project about the power of mass collaboration, government and the Internet. Their latest project has been well road tested as Who Wants to Be…? has been performed for the last three years throughout the UK.

With the measly sum of € 5 just about anyone in this world with access to the Internet can take part in the People Speak’s latest extravaganza; a dangerously democratic game show that turns Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on it head! Entitled Planetary Pledge Pyramid the game show is a platform for people’s own ideas on how to save the planet, with a live audience of around 400 people in Copenhagen and thousands more taking part across the globe and London has a prime role to play. Here is the way it works: the whole audience discusses and votes on how to spend the budget they have created in the interests of saving the planet. The game show gives people a new way of making global decisions and financing them with real money, allowing the participants to have a real influence on the environmental issues world leaders are considering at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Every idea put forward by players will be instantly visualised on a giant screen in the auditorium in Copenhagen and online. Using an ‘ask the audience ‘ computer vision voting system, participants can dictate the agenda of the evening, take part in rigorous debate and voting to change the world. In previous game shows players have decided to collectively buy and won a small piece of woodland, commission a democracy bench for an East London park and most recently, buy a generator to power a clinic in Zambia.

Amelia’s Magazine | Kingston University Illustration Degree Show – Build 2013: Review

Dan Singer Matisse print
Kingston University consistently produces some of the most exciting new illustrators in the UK and this year was no exception. Their show, Build 2013, was hosted at the White Rabbit studio space in Shoreditch, a pair of cavernous rooms in some railway arches. This was a tightly edited show with an imaginative interpretation of the Build theme. Here’s what I liked.

Dan Singer Build
This Monkey Brain by Dan Singer was on sale as a limited edition lino cut – seriously tempted. He also works in zingy colours that I love – see his Matisse style artwork at the top of this post.

Birdhouse. By Yeojin Yun
Snarfle was intrigued by these built birdhouses by Yeojin Yun, each housing some cute critters.

Rachel Shasha
This lush book is by Rachel Shasha, featuring 80s inspired abstract graphics of the kind that have been popular for a couple of years now. I remain a sucker for this look.

Black Gold by Daisy Hardman
Black Gold by Daisy Hardman (who has contributed to Amelia’s Magazine) explores the journey of oil, from source to seepage. It was a dark reminder of the fuel that powers our everyday lives.

Beth Barfoot
Tumbling mouse by Beth Barfoot
This 3D menagerie included a colourful horse and a tumbling mouse, and is a collaboration between Beth Barfoot and Annie Barber. Loved these!

The Slow Roasted Comics series by George Heaven takes a jovial look at the beauty regimes of women.

Madelen Foss obviously has a thing for dogs as they played a big part in her display at the Build show. ‘Some dogs bite, but not if they are treated right‘ and then some are just great big daft friendly mutts…

Jack Taylor
This image was one of a lovely set of risograph prints based on windows by Jack Taylor. In a wise promotional move he sent a set of prints to Wrap Magazine, and you can see the whole range on their blog here.

Rebecca Wheele at Kingston Uni
Rebecca Wheele‘s beautiful panoramas of cows could be prehistoric: maybe she was inspired by rock art?

Michael Bartlett
Modern day stained glass by Michael Bartlett is inspired by his love of football.

Min-Hee Kim
A seriously lovely tactile book by former fashion designer Min-Hee Kim opened to reveal beautifully embossed pages. Snarfle had a great time copping a feel.

I was really taken with the showcase put together by Joseph Melhuish, which featured fake computer screens depicting strange otherworldly environments inspired by Predator Drones.

Amelia’s Magazine | BRIGHTON SHOW: University of Brighton 2014 Graphic Design and Illustration Degree Show Review

Over the weekend more than 70 students from the University of Brighton‘s Graphic Design and Illustration programme brought their wares to The Bargehouse, a cavernous part of the Oxo Tower building with a labyrinth of bare brick rooms over four floors. It was the perfect setting for this show, where viewers were invited to explore the whole building featuring print, illustration and film in various rooms.

It was a mammoth task trying to check everything out, but a task I thoroughly enjoyed. Here’s a rundown of some of my favourites, beginning with Charlie Barrows, whose flowers installation (top) was the first thing that caught my eye. She’d also produced some striking collage prints that at first looked pretty but up close revealed a sinister message (a key theme in her work) – like this one featuring Fred and Rose West.

Providing light relief in juxtaposition was Marcus Connor. I loved his Patrick Caulfield/Michael Craig-Martin-esque line illustrations.

Sarah Todd had curated an entire offshoot room, erecting a vintage gym complete with climbing frame, bench and hoops to display her mixture of retro apparel and printed matter.

I loved Richard Henley‘s bold, Memphis-like prints. The geometric shapes and marble patterns were right up my strasse, based loosely on childrens’ building blocks.

Dan Mountford has courted much press attention with his ethereal photography. I was mesmerised by this side portrait with ripple effect. His double exposure portraits (which I must have missed at the exhibition) are definitely worth checking out – have a look over on his website.

Florence Wood dominated one corner of a room with her all white sculpture, made from bottles, tins and other household packaging items. Her aim was to raise awareness of the level of poverty in Brighton itself.

There was nothing not to love about Andrew Morley‘s skeleton man, a sculpture based on his comic drawing style.

Ralph Pederson‘s Tear Back project aims to reimagine some of Brighton’s derelict buildings.

I loved the minimalist aesthetic of Elina Linina‘s photography, in particular this shot of Copenhagen concrete.

Chantal Caduff produced, amongst other things, this wonderful post-modernist stop-frame animation, featuring multiple magazine collages:

Jordan Pryke lives with bi-polar disorder and his aim is to spread awareness of its complications; his unique visual style resulted in many effective and eye-catching images.

Abi Overland presented some classic, organic, forestry illustrations with a nice mix of different styles.

I really liked Luisa Lloyd‘s abstract graphic design – fragments of images and text combined to form images based on Friedrich Nietzsche‘s works.

“So what do you do for Amelia?” a gentleman partygoer asks me. I tell him I’m one of her writers, buy cialis 40mg and he nods: “I’m Amelia’s father. I’m making myself useful, pharmacy ” he laughs, tadalafil pointing to the camera around his neck. See, we all want to be part of Amelia’s world, and last Friday many of us were gathered under one roof. Illustrators, writers, bloggers and friends were all there to celebrate the launch of Amelia Gregory’s latest creation – Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration.

123 Bethnal Green Road was already buzzing when I arrived, slightly late due to some last-minute fretting over my hair. I’m usually the wash-n-go type, but after following the steadily building party buzz on Twitter all day I’d started to realise some effort was required as this party was going to be of the colourful kind. Just have a flick through the book and you will see it couldn’t be any other ways, really – ACOFI is a riot of colour, creativity and inspiration.

Despite having worked with several of the illustrators present, not knowing who was who made introductions a little tricky. But some were pretty recognisable from their self-drawn portraits, such as Abby Wright, Zarina Liew and Naomi Law.

After catching up with fellow Amelia’s Magazine writers Matt Bramford and Sally Mumby-Croft, I finally got to meet Helen Martin, Amelia’s new music editor, who had come from Bristol with her boyfriend.

After running into crafts columnist Hannah Bullivant and her husband, our little group hit the dance floor – enjoying a fantastic mix of music ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Mariah Carey. I had to make do without my boyfriend though, who had to take his coughing home to an early night. But that didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy 6 Day Riot, a new discovery for me, and some excellent dancey tunes from The Pipettes and Will from Mystery Jets.

An open bar served up Adnams beer and Vodka O – generously poured by bar boys and girls with some enviable dancing skills. The vodka was kicking the next morning, and I clearly remembered why I‘d sworn off the potato spirit years earlier. But all well worth it to see in this excellent book and meet the people who made it happen. Well done, Amelia – and thanks so much for having us.

She strutted on stage, more about knees rising high and her umbrella twiddling like a fairy’s shield.I wanted to take in the art work that was Gabby Young. For her outfit was an explosion of neck and hemline pomposity, her boots electric blue and stomping, and her right eye was surrounded by a blossoming flower type creation. Her signature vibrant red hair was piled high with blue and pink buns attached, whilst her face looked as beautiful as a doll’s.

With this visual feast I felt revived from the previous evening’s late night antics at the ACOFI launch party (where Gabby also was), preceded by late night chats with a dear old friend and his girlfriend on the floor of their North London flat. Charlie beside me eating toast, we had spiraled from lively and boisterous to as sleepy as moles. The day had been spent on the Heath, and cushioned with carbohydrates. For the love of Gabby and The Irrepressibles, we had trekked to the utter freezing, shiny, high rise blocked world of the Barbican. And, ah it was a theatrical and stunning evening.

Gabby Young & Other Animals played a mixture of old and new tracks, there were lively jives and ballerinas with cut out megaphones flouncing through the audience. Liberating, FUN and creatively inspiring. We are told that a new song is about someone on stage. It is slow, pretty and meaningful. “I wonder who that’s for” semi-whispered Chaz, “I really like this one”. Me too. It was obvious throughout that Gabby has been classically trained. Her notes range up and down like carefully controlled billy-o. It appears easy for her to produce these notes, and indeed her operatic background serves her folk/jazz genre delightfully. We’re All In This Together brought about suitably pleased expressions and murmurs from the crowd. Its often played slow notes shot up and down my spine, before her voice gently streamed out like a delicate flower opening. It felt like an anthem.

Moving on, The Irrespressibles are theatre and gothic glitz. Wearing an enormous and glittery hat from Philip Treacy, Jamie McDermott is basically DRAMA. As the singer, the composer and the spectacle, McDermott has a knack of being captivating to the point of eye locked awe. And he orchestrated the whole event superbly, his stage presence perfectly matching the flashing lights, and blasting instrumentals.

The rest of the band both compliment him, but also stand alone as individually beautiful creations. And I mean creations. Each of the nine musicians on stage seemed like a Tim Burton fantasy. Moving in unison and then malfunctioning, like bad robots, they move chaotically about like gothic Toy Story characters. Expressions remain serious and playing, precise and perfect. Each wears beautiful outfits, skimming over bodies with a wink of the eye. See this for a taster of what I mean. It’s INCREDIBLE:

Darkness/light/suspense/breathing/noise/explosion/catwalk – Ooo! Highlights included Nuclear Skies, Knife Song and In Your Eyes. But to be honest the whole set was a triumph. The crowd adored them and the atmosphere was hugely flamboyant and expressively fun. The soaring vocals and dramatic instrument use was just breathtaking. With the emotion of Anthony and The Johnsons, but the Brit extravaganza charm of David Bowie, Jamie McDermott is delicious. With the rest of the band, THE IRREPRESSIBLES are unstoppable.

See, we all want to be part of Amelia’s world, and last Friday many of us were gathered under one roof. Illustrators, writers, bloggers and friends were all there to celebrate the launch of Amelia Gregory’s latest creation – Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration.

123 Bethnal Green Road was already buzzing when I arrived, slightly late due to some last-minute fretting over my hair. I’m usually the wash-n-go type, but after following the steadily building party buzz on Twitter all day I’d started to realise some effort was required as this party was going to be of the colourful kind. Just have a flick through the book and you will see it couldn’t be any other ways, really – ACOFI is a riot of colour, creativity and inspiration.

Despite having worked with several of the illustrators present, not knowing who was who made introductions a little tricky. But some were pretty recognisable from their self-drawn portraits, such as Abby Wright, Zarina Liew and Naomi Law.

After catching up with fellow Amelia’s Magazine writers Matt Bramford and Sally Mumby-Croft, I finally got to meet Helen Martin, Amelia’s new music editor, who had come from Bristol with her boyfriend.

After running into crafts columnist Hannah Bullivant and her husband, our little group hit the dance floor – enjoying a fantastic mix of music ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Mariah Carey. I had to make do without my boyfriend though, who had to take his coughing home to an early night. But that didn’t mean I couldn’t enjoy 6 Day Riot, a new discovery for me, and some excellent dancey tunes from The Pipettes and Will from Mystery Jets.

An open bar served up Adnams beer and Vodka O – generously poured by bar boys and girls with some enviable dancing skills. The vodka was kicking the next morning, and I clearly remembered why I‘d sworn off the potato spirit years earlier. But all well worth it to see in this excellent book and meet the people who made it happen. Well done, Amelia – and thanks so much for having us.

She strutted on stage, more about knees rising high and her umbrella twiddling like a fairy’s shield.I wanted to take in the art work that was Gabby Young. For her outfit was an explosion of neck and hemline pomposity, her boots electric blue and stomping, and her right eye was surrounded by a blossoming flower type creation. Her signature vibrant red hair was piled high with blue and pink buns attached, whilst her face looked as beautiful as a doll’s.

With this visual feast I felt revived from the previous evening’s late night antics at the ACOFI launch party (where Gabby also was), preceded by late night chats with a dear old friend and his girlfriend on the floor of their North London flat. Charlie beside me eating toast, we had spiraled from lively and boisterous to as sleepy as moles. The day had been spent on the Heath, and cushioned with carbohydrates. For the love of Gabby and The Irrepressibles, we had trekked to the utter freezing, shiny, high rise blocked world of the Barbican. And, ah it was a theatrical and stunning evening.

Gabby Young & Other Animals played a mixture of old and new tracks, there were lively jives and ballerinas with cut out megaphones flouncing through the audience. Liberating, FUN and creatively inspiring. We are told that a new song is about someone on stage.
