This weekend the East London Design Show returns with another plethora of design talent just in time to catch your Christmas shopping cash flow. It will be held once more in the grand surrounds of Shoreditch Town Hall, with 38 new designers joining the 100 that have been chosen to exhibit at the show. Last year we discovered East End Prints. Here's a run down of just a small portion of the talent that you can expect to find over the upcoming weekend:
Upcoming designers:
James Brown
Get up off of that thing! James Brown, illustrator and print-maker, makes brilliant typographical limited edition screen prints and linocuts. He has been commissioned by Cath Kidston and the V&A and this year sees two of James' books for babies published by Walker Books.
Martha Mitchell Design
Martha produces ceramic jewellery, tableware and intricate fine line drawings. Her inspiration comes from her love of using everyday objects such as new and old drinks bottles and food packaging.
Harriet Sanders Ltd
Labelled the next Patrick Cox by Grazia Magazine. Harriet’s handmade leather handbags made from ethically produced leathers, in on-trend two-tone colours with unique detailing, are an exciting addition to the accessories at this year’s show and definitely One to Watch!
Formation Collection
A collective promoting new design talent in England, including new designer Maria Holmer showing her passion for graphic design in her London home accessories and gifts range, designed as a response to tacky souvenirs and throwaway design.
Established talent:
Mini Moderns
Listed under Designs of the Year in Elle Decoration's 21st Anniversary edition, Minimoderns will once again be showcasing more of their retro textile and homeware designs including two of their new new ranges; Festival and Whitby.
Michelle Mason
Michelle Mason designs contemporary interior products and design-led giftware. Michelle's strong illustrative designs have been commissioned by a variety of clients including the Southbank Centre, London Transport Museum, The National Gallery and House of Fraser.
People Will Always Need Plates What a great name!
And place mats and coasters and bags and mugs… Table and home ware with illustrated designs of architectural and often iconic places in Britain.
Reiko Kaneko
Contemporary British fine bone china tableware and home accessories with a Japanese edge.
As well as all this, there will be a dedicated create space for all ages, a play area and a Café bar serving delicious wholesome food.
Plus the CraftHouse:
D.I.Y. gift workshops run by talented ELDS designers. Come and hang out in our cosy sitting room with a bit of tea and cake and become the designer; make a hat, print a bag, make your own cards or help knit a giant Christmas decoration for the tree!
Don't forget to also check out the Product Palace, which will feature work by multidisciplinary 3D Design students on the BA course at Havering College. I was very impressed by their graduate work at Free Range this summer.
Admission costs £5 for adults, concessions £3 and accompanied children 15 and under are free. Trade and press free entry with business card. The show opens on Friday from 12 to 8pm and on Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm. For further information see the East London Design Show website.
