Hailing from Brighton (there’s a veritable smorgasbord of great bands coming out of there at the moment, thumb aren’t there?), order Stars and Sons are an indie pop band who specialise in fun-filled tunes packed with extra layers, of instruments and noises. A bit like a very nice cake, in a way – a musical cake. I chatted to lead singer Mike about his band and their dancing triangles.

Hi Mike – you are Mike, right? How did Stars and Sons begin?

Yep, I’m Mike. I basically started the project off in a dark bedroom, recording stuff on dodgy software, and then realised it needed to go somewhere other than my bedroom so I got in Stuart, Sandy, Paul, and later on Luke, because apparently playing live is quite important. And it’s nice to have the company!

Who does what then in the band?

I play piano, Luke and Sandy play guitar, Stuart’s on drums and Paul plays bass. We’ll hopefully expand a bit when time and money come our way. The thing with our songs is that they’re quite densely recorded and it’s hard to recreate that live – there’s glockenspiels and strings flying around. The energy makes up for it, really, of all us playing together live, that kind of makes up for any lost details at the moment.

Listening to your songs they do seem packed with quite a lot of things for indie pop – would you call yourselves indie pop, or something along those lines?

I’m happy with that. I called it pop for a while but a lot of people met that with disapproving looks, but I don’t care really.

That happens sometimes – quite snobby, isn’t it?

Yeah, I mean, I just want to make catchy music, though sometimes I don’t make catchy music – there’s a lot of balance there. I like pop, that’s all.

You’ve just finished recording your debut album – how did that go?

It went really well! It was really stressful because I’ve come from a position where I had endless hours of being able to record things and mix things and program things and suddenly we have two weeks in a studio, and you record things and you don’t really have much time for judgement as to whether it’s fine or not. That sort of pushes parts of you to be more spontaneous. It was a great experience, but still, stressful.

You were working with Dave Eringa. Did it help to work with an experience producer?

It did, it did. He’s into big-sounding things, massive drums, big guitars, that sort of thing, and he really rocked up the recordings a bit. They were a little bit sterile before, just being recorded in my room.

He’s worked with people like Ash

Yeah, and Manic Street Preachers, and even Tom Jones. He told about this time he was recording with Tom, setting up the microphones and things, and asked him what kind of microphone he wanted. “The biggest one you got!” he said. So they just started recording and Tom Jones was clipping and peaking on the signal but he couldn’t really turn it down… I think it turned out fine in the end.

The single you’ve just put out is ‘If It’s Good For Me’ – the video looks like it was a lot of fun to make.

Hah, yeah, it’s one of those things we tried to spend a lot of time over. Matt is very much into his video production, and he spent a long time thinking about props and shots and trying to make it interesting. It’s fun doing that kind of thing, a change from just doing the music.

What’s your next single going to be?

‘Future Proof’ should be the next one, we’ve just been making the video for that…

Ah, what’s that one like?

Well… there’s some dancing. Some dancing triangles.

Dancing triangles?

Yeah. Um. Well, it’s pretty weird, because it’s shot in this MTV sort of style, whereas before we’ve tried to keep things in quite a DIY style. We’ve got a new director, Jess Stead, doing this video. It’s going to look slick, but it’s going to weird too.

When’s the album actually out?

Not entirely sure yet – it’ll be online first, before the physical release. About a month after ‘If It’s Good For Me’ is out, I think. Just get it out there, and hopefully then it’ll slow build.

You’re on the XFM playlist now, I noticed, which is pretty good.

I’m chuffed with that, yeah. The single isn’t something that I’d consider conventionally radio-friendly, a verse-chorus song. I guess it is in its own way, but the other songs there are more conventional, maybe, but I think it’s a nice introduction. Getting radio play is definitely nice.

Any festivals lined up so far?

We’re playing a small festival in Leicester, but nothing else booked just yet though we’ll be hopefully setting those up soon. And we’re playing London this Saturday [the 3rd], that’s our next big show.

Tamara Schlesinger is the talented lead singer and main brains behind the foot stomping folk sounds of 6 Day Riot, a band I have listened to countless times on record and loved many times over live – they even played a storming set at the launch of Amelia’s Compendium of Fashion Illustration in 2011. Over the past year, with a little help from Creative Scotland, she’s put together her first solo album, The Procession. In this her honeyed vocals are looped to magnificent effect over the simplest of instrumentals. It’s a step away from the unabashed raucousness of her band, with melancholic lyrics such as those in the beautiful No Coming Back, So Long and Again (previewed on soundcloud below) inspired by a reflective period in her life. The Procession works best when taken together as a whole, each song subtly altering in mood as the listener is led on a meditative journey by the woven layers of Tamara Schlesinger‘s beautiful voice. I caught up with the singer to find out about the changes in her life.

The Procession, your first solo album, came out this week. What has the reception been like so far?
So far the reception has been great. The album was quite an experimental project for me, moving away from the 6 Day Riot sound and working with a capella vocals and I really enjoyed the challenge. I’ve had some lovely reviews already and a few spins on 6 music, XFM and Amazing Radio. Also Amazing Radio have made the album Album of the Month so I’m pretty happy so far.

The album was made in Glasgow with help from Creative Scotland – how did that process work and how did being at home forge the process?
I wrote the album over the course of a year and discovered that I could apply for funding from Creative Scotland. As I run my own label and have always self-released my music I thought it was a great opportunity. I was so delighted when I received the funding, it allowed me to spend longer in the studio than I normally get the chance to. It also allowed me to work with new musicians (all of whom are Scottish) and to work in a different manner. I went into the studio with ideas, but really they came to life once I was in there, and that was a very different process for me. Normally I would have rehearsed the tracks with the band and arranged all the parts before recording due to budget limitations. Being home was also great, it was fantastic to be in Glasgow, the mood is very different to London and it definitely affected the way the recording went in a positive way.

It’s much more mellow than the work 6 Day Riot is known for – was this deliberate and if so why?
Yes, I didn’t want to do a solo project that sounded like 6 Day Riot, I didn’t see the point in that. If I was going to do something on my own it really needed to sound different to the band. I was in a more melancholy place at the time of writing as well so that is definitely reflective in the mood to the record. I felt like doing an album that flowed together as a whole and I think I managed to achieve that.

What inspired the new direction and lyrics?
I was in the process of packing up my home and moving when a lot of the album was written, along with having some potentially life changing things to deal with –  so I was in a very reflective mood. I was thinking a lot about what your home really means, whether it holds your memories or whether you can pick everything up and start a new. I was also waiting for some test results that could have meant a big change in my life – so the lyrics ended up being more personal to me than usual. I had also been co-writing with Deadly Avenger, we co-wrote the trailer music for 127 Hours (a survival drama film), and the tracks were all cinematic dance in style. So I think when I began writing my own music it ended up bit more cinematic than usual.

You’re expecting a baby soon: how is this affecting your plans to tour and what are your hopes and dreams for your little one?
Well, it is already affecting me as I am much more tired than usual! so I will probably be touring the album again at the start of next year when I release more singles. I just want a healthy, happy baby, but hopefully one that enjoys coming to lots of gigs and festivals and doesn’t get too bored hearing my songs and voice over and over again.

Goodbye Bangkok was one of those wonderful surprises that landed in my musical inbox late last year. From first single Train to Penang – a mournful tune backed by a full orchestra – to the twinkling horns and swooping cellos of Welcome, the album is an elegiac treasure chest of unusual tunes inspired by Richard Gilbert‘s occasionally difficult time in Thailand. Despite harrowing subject matter there is real beauty in this collection; highlights include the duelling banjos that introduce love song The Fool, and a husky male voice submerged by honeyed female vocals in Voodoo Doll. Every song is an unexpected delight. A real find of 2011.

Your debut album came out last September, what has been the reaction? Any pleasant or unusual surprises?
Well, it has all been pleasant really in that it reached a couple of places I never expected it would – BBC 6 Music has played tracks off it a few times and Clint Boon of XFM made it his featured album of the day, which was very nice, as is he. It was a pleasure to simply be in touch with a pop star that features in my own record collection! I originally intended to record this album with my musical ‘other half’, Simon Andrew, and not promote it at all. It was just for our own enjoyment. It was intended to be a download only release with no marketing at all. We were artists in the purest sense! No bullshit, just the music. I still don’t feel comfortable pairing the 2 activities together. So it was my intention to leave it sitting there in cyberspace, ready for any random passersby to enjoy or not enjoy. Anyway, in the 11th hour, my arm was twisted, partly by me, into doing more of the promo work. And I started to enjoy it because it gave birth to Mollusc Records that I set up with a few mates and off we went. There is more to nurture now than just Lymes. The most pleasing thing for me is that, for those that have bought / received a copy of the album, they talk about the lyrics first of all. I was very anxious about the lyrics. They needed to be interesting and not vague because I knew I wanted to explore songs with upfront vocals and in a talking style.

What was the name of the band that you were in during the 90s? And why did you decide to go it alone for awhile?
I was in a noisy band called The Mandelbrot Set. Loads of wah wah and distortion. I packed it in because we had not written any good songs for a few months. I was too impatient. And when I left the band, I realised I had a huge void in my life. I had no job, no degree. So off I went to get the quickest degree I could and then to Thailand, which certainly filled my life with colour.

The subject matter was inspired by your personal encounters whilst living in Thailand…. how did these find their way into a musical format?
This was a key concern for me. The music was writing itself nicely, with my multi-instrumentalist partner Simon and me with the recording gear. The songs were stockpiling with mumbled vocal takes and no finished lyrics. I needed a theme for inspiration and when I wrote one set of lyrics about Thailand, Be My Dead Wife, I was really happy with them. And I was able to write a set of lyrics very quickly. Often in one sitting. I was also very keen on storytelling in music as opposed to nebulous lyrical imagery, where the singer is another instrument…..I spent a lot of time listening to Johnny Cash whilst out there. This probably opened my mind to storytelling.

What prompted the move to Thailand in the first place? You were there for 6 years which is a long time… can you tell us about some of your more interesting experiences? How did you stay alive, ie what was your work during that time?
As I said above, the big void left by not being in a band led me out of the country. It was supposed to be Argentina but I followed a mate to Bangkok after we did a TEFL course. I started off teaching English but quickly moved into market research in the grocery industry. Zzzzz. Some stories are in the album and the lyrics are all printed in the cover sheet. And there is no flowery stuff going on. Very direct I think. In addition to these? I have written a few things down here and deleted them. Sorry! It’s the usual stuff you would expect to see in Thailand; drugs, corruption, passport dealing, working without work permits, vehicle smuggling and ringing, prostitution, tourists and fresh expats getting duped, loutish behaviour, boiler rooms, grotesque sex shows (anybody care to see a go-go dancer shaking a coke bottle, sticking it up her bum, bending over and spraying the audience? No, thought not.), endless road traffic accidents and most sadly, child trading /smuggling. This is something that I could not put on the album. Although the lyrics are observational. the delivery and music add the appropriate vibe. I doubt I’d ever finish it if that were the story. To summarise, a sleezy English chap ran an English Language school but was also allegedly buying children from Orphanages on spec and selling them to Chinese people that were not able to have their own children. At least that is what I was told by others that knew him better than I. To just know the face and name of someone that might get involved in that troubles me. Writing songs about how great the food is and how lovely the people are doesn’t seem to work as well lyrically. But the food is amazing and the people are lovely!

You have said that songs start life in your phone voicemail at about 6am in the morning. Is that because you phone yourself in a half asleep slumber? Has this occurred under any strange circumstances, or in a strange place?
Kind of! I often wake up with song parts going through my head. I am usually convinced they are someone else’s. I sing them into my own voicemail before I forget them, so yes I am barely awake when it happens and then I ask everyone later if they recognise it…… the cellos on Welcome, for example, came about in this way, as did the violins on Voodoo Doll.

Your first live performance was with the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra in October, which is quite a major deal! How did that come about? Any special things you had to adapt when performing with such a large amount of musicians?
That was the hardest gig I ever did. First gig with Lymes and my first gig since the 90s. I wanted to do something special, not just play the local clubs. And several Lymes songs had orchestral parts in them that would have left the song bare without orchestral instruments. We started planning this show 3 years ago. It is really tough getting people to come together for your music when you have hardly any money. But the Hull Phil were really nice people to work with and it certainly opened everyone’s eyes seeing the 2 genres coming together when no one had done anything like it before. We ended up with a chamber orchestra of around 22 players. It was a great success in the end. Amazing really, because we had to manage the show ourselves and many things were going wrong, increasingly so on gig day….. and we were trying to focus on the music.

Who else is Lymes?
Ah. I’m glad you asked about that. Simon is the other one and the musical backbone to this album. He has a lever arch file with hundreds of songs in it and we still have not gone through them all to see which ones need to be worked on. The 2 best songs on the album are The Fool and Train To Penang. He wrote the music for both of them. He is a very good drummer, a good keyboard player and a competent guitarist. There is also musical pedigree in his family. His brother is perhaps my favourite drummer of all time and had some success with Kingmaker in the early 90s.

My favourite story about Simon is that, while watching his brother having a really good time in Kingmaker, opportunity knocked on his door in the shape of an invitation to a drumming audition for a World Party tour in America. And he turned it down because he thought their music was boring!

When can people next see you live, and are you doing any festivals next summer?
We are planning another big show, this time with a gospel choir. We just need to find one that will not be too concerned about the lyrical content and lack of Jesus worship in our songs. We are also waiting to hear if we are on the bill for the Great Escape festival in Brighton in May. Fingers crossed on that one.

Amelia’s Magazine | Kingsley Chapman and The Murder at the Sebright Arms: Live Review

Returning to the fray following the demise of Teesside favourites The Chapman Family, Kingsley Chapman has decided to take a subtly different musical approach. Whereas his previous band were an intense guitar driven experience, Chapman has now opted for a more, if not orchestral, then certainly expansive sound (his current seven piece band, The Murder, squeezing on to the bijou stage in Bethnal Green’s Sebright Arms was evidence of that).

It was a pretty busy crowd, and the London Superfans, who I’m pretty sure I’ve seen at every Chapman Family gig I’ve been to, were once again in attendance (it turns out that a friend of mine knows one of them – small world, eh?). As the band took to the stage, Chapman sardonically announced “it’s great to be back in your lovely city”, before launching into opening song Olympians.

The sound may have a grander feel, incorporating piano, strings and trumpet, but lyrically Chapman hasn’t strayed too far from the subject matter of his Chapman Family days – a mix of heartfelt emotion coupled with righteous anger at the state of the nation. Guillotine had Morrissey-esque touches, followed by the sweeping Lovers. Begrudgingly getting into the festive spirit, Chapman also introduced their “Christmas song” – however, As The Stars Fall Down isn’t likely to get your dad jigging around the tree.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom, though, as Chapman joked that the set was a bit heavy on the ballads. I also noticed a fair bit of wine being consumed by various members of the band – clearly Kingsley Chapman and The Murder have a more refined palate than the average rock and roll band.

Chapman’s guitar amp gave up the ghost before the final song, which required, as he called it “plan B” which he also warned “might sound a bit strange” – a now piano led but none the less fierce Kill That Man, which ended up with The Murder’s percussionist not only sending his own kit flying, but the drummer’s as well.

With the Lovers single having had a fair bit of rotation of BBC6 and XFM this year, and recent reviews starting to make waves, perhaps 2016 will see the success that for Kingsley Chapman has been long overdue.
